Iran says senior PKK leader Karayılan captured

Iranian Parliament's Foreign Affairs and Security Committee chairman, Alaadin Burucerdi said senior leader of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) Murat Karayılan was captured by Iranian security forces, the Anatolia news agency reported on Sunday.

Commenting on weekend's news reports on Karayılan's capture for the Fars news agency, Burucerdi confirmed the reports. “The number two man of the PKK has been captured. Our intelligence forces had a significant achievement bu capturing Karayılan,” he was quoted as saying by the Fars news agency.

Recalling that Iranian revolutionary guards have been carrying out operations against the Party for a Free Life in Kurdistan (PJAK), a PKK offshoot, since July 16, he said that was what they expected from the Iranian Revolutionary Guards.

Saturday afternoon, state run TRT network aired a story claiming that Karayılan had been captured in Kandil, a mountain in northern Iraq where the PKK is based, by Iranian security forces. However, PKK affiliated news agencies denied the reports. The TRT said “Sources say separatist terrorist organization [PKK's] leader Murat Karayılan has been captured by Iran. However, this hasn't been confirmed by any officials.”

Interior Minister İdris Naim Şahin on Saturday also said the Turkish state had no official information regarding claims aired on television earlier in the day saying that terrorist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) leader Murat Karayılan had been captured in Iranian security forces.

Karayılan, born in 1954 in the Birecik district of the southeastern Turkish province of Şanlıurfa, joined the PKK in 1979. He uses the code name Cemal inside the PKK. He took over the helm of the PKK after PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan's capture in 1997. He has made numerous statements in support of laying down arms in the recent period, making him a target for the hawks inside the PKK.

thats good if its true, i wish he will be judged by iranians, as a result execution is inevitable. if we got him instead of iran he would be protected against execution by law, maybe our guys made a deal with iranians.. who knows

iranian officials say they have captured the second most important guy in pkk and havent said karayilan.

I fear shady deals, or the iranians will question him thoroughly without saying anything, because once his identity is clarified, some forces will probably try to save his arse.
