Tasnim News Agency - Iran, Russia to Ink New Contract for Delivery of S-300 Missile System Soon

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan announced on Tuesday that a new contract for the delivery of Russian-made S-300 air defense missile systems to Iran will be signed in the coming days.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference in Tehran on Tuesday, Dehqan said the contract will be signed by the two sides in Russia in a week or two, adding that according to the new deal, four battalions of S-300 missiles will be delivered to Iran, instead of three battalions in the previous agreement.

He went on to say that within a short period after inking the new agreement, the missiles will be supplied to Iran.

Under a contract signed in 2007, Russia was required to provide Iran with at least five S-300 defense system batteries. In 2010, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev cancelled the contract as he came under strong US and Israeli pressure not to go ahead with the sale of the weapons system, but his pretext was that the sale was covered by the fourth round of the UN Security Council sanctions against Iran.

Elsewhere in his comments, Brigadier General Dehqan said Iran has completed a number of “significant strategic projects” in the sphere of ballistic missiles.

He also unveiled plans for the mass-production of the new generation of Iranian tanks.

According to the minister, a 500-ton submarine will be also delivered to Navy in the current Iranian year, which ends on March 20, 2016.

Earlier this month, Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari had announced that Iran’s new homegrown naval gear, including missile-launching warships, destroyers, as well as squadrons of vessels and submarines, will be launched until March 2017.

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran plans to withdraw a lawsuit it filed against Russian arms firm Rosoboronexport over the long-overdue delivery of S-300 air defense system to the Islamic Republic, media reports said on Wednesday.
"The parties agreed that the lawsuit against Rosoboronexport, which Iran submitted to the Geneva court, with the requirement to pay a penalty amounting to nearly 4 billion dollars, will be withdrawn," Interfax quoted an informed source as saying on Wednesday.

According to the report, the source made the remarks on the sidelines of MAKS-2015 air show underway out of Moscow, and added that the lawsuit can be withdrawn before the signing of a new contract for the sale of Antey-2500 systems to Iran.

“Today it is a technical procedural matter already,” the source said.

The source also said that the decision for dropping the lawsuit against Russia came after Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehghan made an official visit to Moscow in April this year.

Under a contract signed in 2007, Russia was required to provide Iran with at least five S-300 defense system batteries.

In 2010, then-president Dmitry Medvedev cancelled the contract as he came under strong US and Israeli pressure not to go ahead with the sale of the weapons system, but his pretext was that the sale was covered by the fourth round of the UN Security Council sanctions against Iran.

Later, Iran lodged a $4 billion lawsuit at an international court in Geneva against Russia's arms export agency.

Back in April, Russian President Vladimir Putin decided to lift the ban on the S-300 missile system delivery to Iran.

Iran Expects Delivery of S-300s Soon After Signing of New Deal

TEHRAN (Sputnik) — Iran expects to receive Russian S-300 missile defense systems 30-40 days after the signing of a new deal with Moscow, a source in the Iranian defense ministry told Sputnik on Tuesday.

"The transfer of the systems will take place 30-40 days following the signing," the source said.

Tehran will send a delegation to Moscow next week for talks on the delivery of Russian S-300 missile defense systems, an Iranian defense ministry source told Sputnik on Tuesday.

"The signing will take place in Moscow with the participation of an Iranian military delegation and a Russian delegation. Work to clarify the date is currently underway, this will probably be next Wednesday or Thursday," the source said.

According to the source, the delegation will be headed by the Iranian defense minister or one of his deputies.

Iran will also withdraw its lawsuit against Russia immediately after the signing of a new agreement, an Iranian defense ministry source told Sputnik on Tuesday:

"The claim will be withdrawn immediately following the signing of a new delivery contract," the source said.

The delivery of Russian S-300 missile defense systems to Iran could pave way for new deals between the countries in the military-technical sphere, such as purchase of aircraft, an Iranian defense ministry also added:

"The delivery will open the door for other deals with Russia in the military sphere, especially in military aviation. We expect to sign an agreement, according to which Iran would receive a number of various Russian military aircraft," the source said.

In 2007, Russia and Iran sealed a contract for the delivery of the S-300 surface-to-air missile system. Three years later, then-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev put the deal on hold after the UN Security Council introduced an embargo on arms deliveries to Iran over the alleged development of nuclear weapons by the country.

In April, Russian President Vladimir Putin lifted the ban on S-300 deliveries, shortly after the P5+1 group of international negotiators and Iran reached a framework nuclear agreement.
