TEHRAN, May 10 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has plans to launch satellites into a geosynchronous equatorial orbit (GEO) 36,000 km above the earth, IRGC's Aerospace Force Space Division announced on Sunday.

Brigadier General Ali Jafarabadi pointed to the IRGC's recent "successful" launch of the homegrown Noor 1 satellite into space, saying that it plans to reach higher orbits in coming years, according to Tasnim news agency.

The GEO is very significant and strategic, since the telecommunication and television satellites are placed in this orbit, Jafarabadi was quoted as saying.

The launch of satellite into the geosynchronous equatorial orbit has economic benefits for the country and would also protect Iran's space assets, he added.

On April 22, the IRGC announced the launch of country's first military satellite Noor 1 into space by the satellite carrier Qased (messenger) from the central desert region of the country. It said that the satellite "successfully" reached the 425 km orbit above the earth. Enditem

The day Iran launches a rocket capable of reaching GTO/GEO----I'd truly tip my hat to Iranians in respect.

I wished Iran would have made progress in this regard by now (since Iran first announced its plans to launch rocket capable of reaching GEO in 2010). But I hope Iranians truly get serious this time and pull it off.

Best of luck! :yahoo:

I am old enough to remember that they planned to launch human to space in 2018.

Had Iran's space program been allowed to grow and not hindered by the politics of Mr Rouhani, then we may well have seen something like that in year 2021.

Not much use launching human into space. They do need satellite to link their drones. That way they operate Shahed 129 in Syria all the way from Iran.

They wasted billions on Assad.

For GEO orbit u need very big rocket. Iran does not have one even in development.

Iran's decision to get involved in Syria is a different topic. Politically, there was a deliberate move to slow down the Iranian space program. This was done to produce a favourable situation for the negotiation that were going on and so on.

Iran actually has a minimum of two such projects. First is the solid fuelled Qaem in development by the IRGC. The other is the liquid fuelled "Soroush":

Souroush has been confirmed to be used to put satellites into GEO.

Iran wasted on Assad billions of $ per year and keeps wasting. Obviously it has very strong impact on Irans space program.

Appears you're not interested in a constructive discussion. Then as usual, wait and see.

1) U said that slow down space program was political decision. I explained u the reason: Iran spends many billions on Assad, so no money left for space. U know money does not grow on trees.

2) Look at ur pic. Your so called GTO launcher is much larger than Simorgh, which Iran is unsuccessfully developing in over a decade and which is basically just a variant of North Korean Unha.

So if it takes more than 10 years to redesign a North Korean rocket, then how much time it will take to build much much larger and much much complex rocket from scratch? Think about it.

The slow down of space program had nothing to do with money problems. It was a political decision. Apparently you want to pretend you understand Persian, have been following the issue in Iranian news channels and know more than Iran itself. Since so, then watch this below video in Persian and tell me what the IRGC commander was saying:

As for your claim the Simorgh is a "variant of Unha". I have debunked this claim many times but conveniently you have forgotten. The only thing Simorgh and Unha have in common are the first stage rocket engines.

Your statement was not about whether it was take long or not, you stated Iran has no such project in development. You have a tendency of trying to change the goal post whenever you are proven wrong.

As for Soroush, this is not a new project. Here, listen to your own Israeli aerospace expert, Tal Inbar:
