Iran and Pakistan are seriously pursuing the fate of five Iranian border guards recently kidnapped by terrorists and transferred to Pakistan, an Iranian official says.

A week ago, Tehran and Islamabad held a joint border commission in the Pakistani city of Quetta to further discuss the abductions with Pakistani officials.

Deputy Governor of Iran's Sistan and Baluchestan Province Ali Asghar Mir Shikari, who headed the Iranian delegation in the joint commission, on Thursday described the meeting as positive, saying that Iranian and Pakistani security officials are trying to secure the release of the border guards.

In last week’s commission, the officials of both sides underlined joint efforts to control borders, launch a counter-terrorism campaign, and fight drug trafficking as well as illegal border crossing, he underlined.

Five Iranian border guards were abducted in Jakigour region in the southeastern Iranian Sistan and Baluchestan Province on February 6 and taken to Pakistani territory.

The so-called Jaish-ul-Adl terrorist group claimed responsibility for the kidnapping.

Tehran has asked Interpol to hunt down the perpetrators.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has called for an investigation into the incident, tasking the Foreign Ministry with taking the necessary measures to implement a border security agreement with Pakistan.

In February 2013, Iran and Pakistan signed a security agreement under which both countries are required to cooperate in preventing and combating organized crime, fighting terrorism and countering the activities that pose a threat to the national security of either country.

Iran has repeatedly called on Pakistan to comply with the terms of the agreement.

On February 25, Mohammad Rafi’ee, the head of the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s Department of Social Affairs said that Pakistani authorities had located the hideout of the terrorist group and the location where the kidnapped Iranian border guards are being held.
