An electricity industry official says Iran's MAPNA group of companies is the world's sixth manufacturer of gas turbines and has won a big chunk of the global markets.

Abbas Aliabadi, the managing director of the group, said on Wednesday that manufacturing gas turbines is monopolized by six countries and even India and China were assemblers or just made small turbines, IRNA reported.

"MAPNA has the capacity to generate 8,000 MW of electricity which is 3,000 MW above domestic needs as the country requires 5,000 MW of electricity," he noted.

He said Iran's electricity industry ranks 16th-17th in the world in power generation and is the biggest in the Middle East.

The official added that the nominal capacity of Iranian power plants is 63,000 MW and one new power plant comes on stream every week.

Aliabadi said MAPNA was building power plants in Syria, Oman and Iraq and negotiations were underway to build two power plants in Lebanon.

MAPNA Group is conglomeration of a parent company and 33 subsidiaries which develop power plant, oil and gas, and rail transportation projects.

The group was formed in 1992 and has been involved in over 85 projects.
