Iran invites Bangladesh to join cross-border gas grid

Iran has shown interest to involve Bangladesh in its planned cross-border gas pipeline, which will guarantee supply to energy-deficient Pakistan and India, officials said Saturday.

In a recent letter to the Finance Ministry's Economic Relations Division (ERD), the Iranian ambassador in Dhaka said Bangladesh could join the IPI pipeline project to be built to supply natural gas from Iran, the officials said.

"We have forwarded the letter of Iranian envoy to the energy division. The division will now chart its own course," a senior ERD official told the FE.

He said since the tri-nation gas pipeline is supposed to reach up to the Indian city of Kolkata, Bangladesh can be linked to the grid to secure gas supply by Iran.

In 1995, Iran had signed a deal with Pakistan to export gas, but subsequently Tehran tapped Pakistan's nuclear rival India to participate in the trilateral grid scheme.

In 2000, Iranian government launched talks with officials of India and Pakistan on the possible routes, modes of transport, and geopolitical situation.

Dubbed the "peace pipeline," the gas pipeline would traverse over 2,775 kilometres from Iran's South Pars gas field in the Persian Gulf through the Pakistani city of Khuzdar, with one branch going on to Karachi and a second branch extending to Multan and then on to India.

According to the Oil and Gas Journal, Iran has an estimated proven natural gas reserve of 1,045 trillion cubic feet (tcf), second only to Russia.

Russia is the top reserve holder in the world with its 1,680 tcf of proven natural gas reserve as of January 2010, the Oil and Gas Journal said.

The ERD official said Iran has indicated that the pipeline may stretch up to Kolkata and urged Bangladesh to explore the possibility of its inclusion.

He said, "It is really a great opportunity for Bangladesh as the country's recoverable gas reserve would start drying up from 2013."

At present, Bangladesh has a shortage of nearly 300 million cubic feet (mcf) of gas supply per day against total demand of 2300mcf of gas.

Nearly 87 per cent of Bangladesh's electricity is generated from natural gas-a scarce resource Petrobangla said could deplete by 2015.

A senior Petrobangla official said the government should diversify its import sources in view of the country's limited reserves of 12-tcf and the demand for energy that is surging past 8.0 per cent a year.

He said, "I think gas import from Iran is a viable option for Dhaka."

He said that the government should join negotiation with Iranian, Pakistani and Indian government for the proposed IPI pipeline.

"Kolkata is very close to Bangladesh. It will be easier for the government to bring the pipeline to our border."

Isnt India out of the IPI project..

IF India is out then hw come BD come in..?

.
If Bangladesh moves in then the whole project might seem viable again for India as well. Iranians are no stupid. They know they will be able to sell gas in its eastern side of the border without getting into risk of saction by west.

My sincere advice..think before u jump into this project incase it starts up.

In times of war or even conditions of war with Pak u can face unnecesary hardships just because the pipeline goes thru India.

We are facing hardship anyways.. And once IPI project in place India will always try to avoid war.. does'nt it?

Actually the problem is energy supply must be uninterrupted for the industry to flourish. A mere cut of week will be enough to make the dependent industries go bankrupt!

Isn't BD trying trying to get natural gas from Myanmar, I think it's infinity more feasible.

Depends on what percentage of India's energy needs are being fulfilled by the pipeline. If it is(as i suspect it will be) a small percentage, then it wont really affect any decision taken on war.

For enhancing its economy India needs to improve its relationships with Pakistan and resolve the long outstanding issues. Since Pakistan is not only a gateway to Central Asian Republics but also to the enery rich middle and far east counteries and IPI project could help india to conter gas shortages

It won't be a small percentage, Industry depends on energy and there's a severe energy crisis in North India and that's why it's the least industrialized zone in India.

Myanmar does not have enough gas. So alternative should be explored. That does not mean Myanmar will be discarded.

How will Bangladesh join the pipeline project??Where will this pipeline go through??

According to the news, kolkata was supposed to be the end point....if BD enters, probably the line will be extended to where we want the gas to be delivered....my guess, it will be north east BD....

Cheers!!!

Not always...and then always u have these so called "NON-STATE-ACTORS".

So go for Myanmar....thats more feasible economically and logistically.

The reason India seeks energy sources is for its strategic energy secuity as a nation. The moment the pipeline travels through Pakistan the whole viability and purpose of the project from the Indian point of view is lost
