Trend: Iran intends to complete the construction of the 175-km Gazvin-Rasht railway as part of the International North-South Transport Corridor until the end of March 2017, said Hossein Ashoori, vice-president of the Iranian Railways.

Ashoori made the remarks addressing the “Strategic Partnership 1520: The Caspian Region” International Rail Business Forum, which kicked off in Baku Nov. 25.

“Regarding the Rasht-Astara section, currently negotiations are conducted with Azerbaijan on financing and constructing that section,” added Ashoori.

The Gazvin-Rasht-Astara (Iran)-Astara (Azerbaijan) railway is a part of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), which will connect Northern Europe with Southeastern Asia, as well as link railways of Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia.

The corridor is planned to transport 6 million tons of cargo per year at the initial stage and 15-20 million tons of cargo in the future.
