Iran cuts off man's fingers for theft

Amnesty International has condemned Iranian authorities for cutting off the fingers of a man convicted of theft.

The rights group said the amputation, carried out at a prison in the northern province of Mazandaran, was "an abhorrent form of torture".

Iranian officials said the man was found guilty of 28 cases of theft.

Iran's Islamic penal code says theft "on the first occasion" is punishable by the amputation of four fingers of the right hand.

Iranian authorities have defended amputation as the best way to deter theft despite protests by international human rights organisations.

However, reports of such punishments are rare.

Saleh Higazi, Amnesty's deputy director for the Middle East and North Africa, said in a statement on Thursday that the premeditated "maiming and mutilation of individuals is not justice".

"It is a harrowing assault against human dignity. Reforms to Iran's penal code that would put an end to this outrageous practice are long overdue."

The Iranian judiciary's news agency Mizan said the sentence had been carried out on Wednesday in the capital of Mazandaran, Sari. The convicted man was not named.

Iran is an Islamic republic and its legal system is based on a strict reading of Sharia law.

In January 2018 authorities in north-eastern Iran amputated the hand of a 34-year-old man convicted of stealing sheep.

Similar punishments have been meted out in Saudi Arabia, Nigeria and Somalia.

Iranian authorities were widely criticised by rights groups last year for flogging a man who was convicted of consuming alcohol as a teenager more than 10 years earlier.

In February this year the US and human rights groups expressed anger after Iran executed two teenage boys for rape.

Amnesty said at the time that Iran had executed nearly 100 juvenile offenders since 1990 - the highest number of any nation.

.
With this logic, Most Pakistani politicians would be fingers less.
When are we implementing such measures of punishments!!
Hurry up before Nawaja Butt and Maryam Butt leaves the country.
Frari would just look great without fingers.
Imagine how much of Pakistan's looted money would be saved from having no nails!!

.
Fine with it, if you are not thieve, you shouldn't have any issue with punishments.

What about accountability of leaders from top to bottom? Why they didn't cut fingers/hands of President's brother? cut his some parts too as deterrence.

Where was this amnesty international when burqa was forcefully taken down in france and forcing women not to wear burqa in denmark. Oh yes! in that case only "there country there rules" apply. How about Slovakia which doesn't even recognize islam despite having muslim population?

NO.

It is not fine.

Specially in the state of justice that the legal system can provide .Not to mention the brutality of doing something like that tho another human being.

Do you have any idea how many innocent people sit in prison ?

The legal system and judges are only human and mistakes are often made. An innocent man in prison must be going through hell , but at least if new evidence is found , there is always a chance he would be released.

What are you going to do if this man had his fingers chopped off ? Say sorry ? Attach his fingers back ?

Same goes for the death penalty.

Will he say sorry to the person whom he theft? You need to realise a small theft lead to big once. Later in time he'll threaten life to steal.

.
Hmmm it's bad but not veeery very bad.
Better option would be forced labour for Iranian factories in concentration camps till all damages were paid back, own living costs paid and above that the costs for the whole proces of being arrested and being judged.

And not only the costs and damages to the society should be paid back by forced labour, but the state should also make some profit. A part of the salary of the slave should be paid to the local government.

Will you cut off fingers of your own son for stealing biscuits from the neighbours house without asking...??
Since small thefts leads to bigger thefts in the future..???

My son will never steal. I don't think he stole biscuits but it was worth more.

I don't drag myself down to your level and turn to your family but let's say this example a thief enter your house and theft all of your hard earned money. Got caught. Released after year or two then theft again then again then again. Will it be enough.

I also think you misunderstood me. I didn't say small theft I said small haram acts that lead to bigger once.

Plus theft crime is lowest in GCC and Iran due to rules like these. People feel more secure there.

So now small thefts are ok according to you...?
So there are loop holes to get around many punishments mentioned in the Quran..?
You twist it according to your whim. This shows the real nature of people.
I now know how mutah marriages are legalised by these same mullahs.

.
But .....but ..........but in Israel (Occupied Palestine), the Zionist Jews there make their matzah (Jewish bread) with human blood after they undertake child sacrifices.

I could write a few words on how crime is never reduced by brutal and cruel punishment , but by society investing in education and social conditions.

I could write a few words on the general lousy human rights condition are in the middle east , or on how some here who responded , enjoy leaving in the west yest prescribe this shit to their brothers.

But seeing some of the reactions here , i see no reason to bother.

So I would sum it up in one word :

Disgusting.

If you care about human rights, you should've been speaking of the suffering of the Palestinian people under the most brutal, apartheid regime on earth: Israel. Spare us with your selective human rights "concerns". A day doesn't go by where a Palestinian isn't killed, wounded or evicted from his (or her) homes in their ancestral homeland, and here you're preaching human rights.

Disgusting.

I never say small theft are okay read again.

Mutah marriages are faar better then rape. Just look at statistics of theft and rape between India and Iran. You'll know why Islam is the best way of life anything that your man made rules can make.
