Iran begins producing new short-range missile

March 07 2010 at 08:59AM

Tehran - Defence Minister Ahmad Vahidi on Sunday opened a new production facility that will make short-range missiles that can destroy targets at sea.

Vahidi said the Nasr 1 (Victory) missile was capable of "destroying targets weighing three thousand tons".

"It is a short-range missile which can be fired from the seashore and also from different vessels (ships) and in future it will have the ability to be fired from helicopters and submarines," Vahidi said in Tehran where the facility is located.

Vahidi last month opened two other missile production plants, one making ground-to-air missiles dubbed Qaem (Rising) and the other turning out surface-to-surface missiles dubbed Toofan 5 (Storm).

Iran's missile and space programmes have sparked mounting alarm in the West amid fears that a command of advanced ballistics technologies combined with the nuclear know-how acquired from its declared civilian programme may enable it to produce an atomic weapon.

Iran denies it is seeking nuclear weapons but has regularly boasted of having missiles that can target arch-foe Israel.

In December it tested the Sejil 2 (Lethal Stone) missile, describing it as a faster version of a medium-range missile that could allow it to strike Israel. - AFP

Iran Starts Mass-Production of Nasr 1 Cruise Missiles

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Iranian Defense Ministry started mass-production of Nasr 1 (Victory 1) cruise missiles on Sunday.

"Nasr 1 missile is a cruise missile capable of destroying 3-ton weighted vessels," Iranian Interior Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi said at a ceremony to inaugurate Nasr 1 production line at the defense ministry's Aerospace Industries Organization.

Vahidi also said that Nasr 1 is a short-range coast-to-sea and sea-to-sea missile which could be fired from coasts and all types of vessels.

He announced that his ministry plans to enhance tactical capabilities of the missile, saying the missile will soon be equipped with the capability to be fired from choppers and submarines.

The minister stressed that once the Army's Navy and the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) naval forces come in possession of these mass-produced cruise missiles, the Islamic Republic of Iran's naval defense capability would experience an outstanding jump forward.

In December 2008, The Iranian naval forces successfully test-fired the surface-to-surface Nasr 1 in the final stage of Unity 87 wargames in the Persian Gulf waters.

The surface-to-surface Nasr-1 missile was fired from a warship and hit its target at a distance of 30 km (19 miles) and destroyed it. It was the first test of the new missile.

The Unity 87 wargames started on December 2, 2008 for a six-day military exercise with over 60 warships as well as fighter jets, unmanned aerial vehicles, torpedoes, light and heavy submarines and gunboats.

The Imperial Iranian Air Force (IIAF) will soon test fire a new version of a 2,000lb guided bomb.

Air Force commander-in-chief Hassan Shahsafi said the Qassed-1 guided bomb has been mass produced and given to the air force, according to Reuters.

"The Qassed-2 has a longer range, more accuracy and enjoys more explosive power than the older version," he said.

The Qassed (Herald) bomb was first test fired in 2006 during a large-scale military exercise in Iran.

Iran has recently increased the development of missiles and other new weapons, being concerned about the growing US military presence in neighbouring Iraq and Afghanistan.

That is a PGM and is not talking about the missile that this thread is about. Also, Iran's Air Force is called the IRIAF (Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force) and not the IIAF, which was the name of the Air force under the Shah of Iran.

Congratulations to Iran.

btw looks similar to below

CHETA C-701/C-701KD, C-704/C-704KD, C-705 Anti Ship / Land Attack Cruise Missile

Should be able to sink a dingy. Anything larger and it is doubtful.

This Missile is basically a flying bomb, which lacks maneuvering thrusters, countermeasures and anything else.

Its just to fire blindly at a target and hope it hits it.

US Mini Guns should be able to shoot it down.
