TEHRAN – On Tuesday, top officials from Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan signed 11 memorandums of understandings (MOUS).
The documents were signed at the presence of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his Azeri counterpart Ilham Aliyev who arrived in Tehran on Tuesday for talks with Iranian officials.

The MOUs include cooperation in areas of oil and gas, customs, health, labor, as well as sale of electricity, connection of railway networks, and building a railway bridge to connect Iranian Astara to Azeri Astara among others.
The cooperation on oil and gas projects was signed between the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) and State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR).

An agreement was also signed between the Gahdir Investment Co. and SOCAR in areas of oil and gas industries and production of medical equipment.

During a joint press conference with Aliyev, President Rouhani said now that the nuclear deal between Iran and great powers, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), has gone into effect
Iran and Azerbaijan can expand cooperation in various spheres.

Rouhani also said Iran and Azerbaijan share common views on issues in the Middle East, a reference to the conflicts in Syria and Yemen.

“We believe that political solution is the answer to regional issues and military solution cannot solve any problem,” he noted.

Aliyev said that Iran and Azerbaijan have always enjoyed good relations due to their affinities.
The Azeri president also said Tehran and Baku will expand cooperation in fighting terrorism.
He also invited the Iranian president to visit Azerbaijan.
In a meeting in which Iranian and Azeri officials were present, Rouhani said that the two countries enjoy “strategic” relationship.

There is no impediment to expand cooperation, he added.
Rouhani said that Iran prioritizes relations with neighboring countries after the implementation of the nuclear deal.
Elsewhere, he said that Iran attaches great importance to the territorial integrity of the neighboring countries.
He also said that the Caspian Sea is the “sea of friendship”.
The Caspian Sea is shared by Iran, Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan.
