Yes, it is possible that Iranians intercepted the drone and attempted to take it down with gunfire but the mission proved to be much more complicated then it was originally anticipated.

For Iranians, their is no shame in admitting a failure if it happened. You guys aren't supernatural beings who can do anything.

This event also suggests that it isn't wise to underestimate the value and performance of drones. They come in different shapes, sizes and capabilities. In the future, UCAVs will be something to fear.
