More details awaited...

I doubt anyone would have survived the crash. Having traveled by Iran Air within Iran recently, I can tell you those things are flying coffins. Regardless of what the regime is up to, I think its unfair to punish the Iranian people (most of who oppose the regime) in this manner through sanctions

Edit: Reuters reporting 156 passengers were on board

Especially if planes are in the state much of Iran Air's fleet is in..I have been on some dodgy flights in my life, including those of post Soviet Russia and the Central Asian stans but none have been as antiquated or poorly maintained as those of Iran Air. One of the planes I traveled on was a Boeing 737 of 1960s vintage, with little evidence of any updating in the subsequent 40-50 years..I was seated next to the exits and was shocked to see random pieces of wiring used to fasten the exit doors in places..

Its appalling how sanctions have hit the common man in Iran the hardest whilst it has done nothing to hurt the interests of those in power.Surely there must be a better way to bringing the regime to the negotiating table...

May Allah Almighty take care of them.
Inalilahe wainailehey rajeoon and fast recovery for the injured ameen.

At least 50 survive plane crash in northwest Iran

URMIA, IRAN (BNO NEWS) -- A passenger plane carrying up to 105 people crashed in northwestern Iran on Sunday evening, state-run media reported, but at least 50 people survived the accident.

The Fars news agency said the Fokker 100 aircraft went down near Urmia, a city in northwestern Iran and the capital of West Azerbaijan Province. It said 92 to 97 passengers and eight crew members were on board the plane, which was owned by Iran Air.

The agency cited a local official as saying that at least 50 people had survived the accident and were being treated for their injuries. "All the hospitals in Urmia are ready and prepared to serve the plane crash casualties," an official was cited as saying.

Fars added that rescue workers were being hampered by heavy snow.

Plane crash seems to be a regular event in Iran.. these days.
Why not govt. do some thing about it.
There a/c definitely sucks and full of passengers, if you don't die with air crash there is a chance to die from suffocation.

I my self, once fainted in a local flight, due to lack of oxygen in cabin.

I hope this is true but as with anything coming out of Iran, these figures are difficult to corroborate. The terrain in that part of Iran is mountainous and extremely difficult so chances of survival would be remote unless the crash happened whilst the aircraft was still on the runway.

As far as the perverse thinking of the Iranian establishment goes, owning up to the true scale of such events would be perceived as 'weakness' in the West as it would reveal the true extent to which the country is being affected by sanctions..

I don`t know if the govt can do anything about it (apart from adopting a more conciliatory approach towards the West leading to easing of sanctions of course). I don`t know if the likes of Mahan Air (which I believe is private) is any better?

It is frightening how most of these aircraft are literally being operated on a wing and a prayer- anyone visiting Iran should avoid traveling by air (mind you, roads, despite being quite good, are not much safer either with all the bad driving habits one normally associates with the subcontinent in full evidence)

May the death toll be low, and injuries be minor. Less percentage, but hope for the best. No link btw.

An Iranian passenger plane with more than 100 people on board has crashed, Iranian media have reported.

The semi-official Fars news agency said of the 105 passengers and crew on board, at least 50 had survived.
The plane was flying from the capital Tehran when it came down near the north-western city of Orumiyeh - which was its final destination.

There have been a number of accidents involving Iranian planes over the last few years.

Its civil fleet is made up of old planes in poor condition due to their age and lack of maintenance. Last July a passenger plane burst into flames while landing in Mashhad, killing 17 passengers.

Ten days earlier, a Tupolev plane had caught fire mid-air and crashed in northern Iran, killing all 168 people on board.

That incident was the third deadly crash of a Tupolev 154 in Iran since 2002.

50 out of 105 survive Iran Air crash: report

Fifty from the 105 passengers and crew on board an Iran Air plane which crashed in bad weather on Sunday survived the accident, Iran's emergency services chief and media said.

"So far no reports of death have been reported to me," said emergency services head Gholam Reza Masoumi told Fars news agency. "But 50 injured people out of the 105 on board have come of the plane alive."

The Iran Air plane crashed near the northwestern city of Orumiyeh at around 7:45 pm (1615 GMT), an official in West Azerbaijan province said, quoted on state television's website.

"The airplane took off an hour later than scheduled time from Tehran towards Orumiyeh and because of bad weather conditions came down in a village area near Orumiyeh," the unidentified official said.

Fars news agency said 105 people people were believed to be on board and that the aircraft was a US-made Boeing.

Trying. But not successful.
HESA is going to produce 70-100 passenger airplane with help of Antonov I think. But there are many problems in this case including HESA's budget limit. Most of the budget is going to Missile development and a little is reserved for such research.
For better understanding:
Let us see the first project by HESA to produce An-140.
If they went on their plan, they should have built 50 of them now and could be making 80-85% of parts themselves. But now they have just built 8 with 8 more under construction. and according to their own announcement, less than 50% of parts can be produced in Iran.
