@Nihonjin1051 @Indischer Let's get back to the point. It hasn't been famous somehow in India and especially among parents they awareness on this is zero. Once the parents gets awareness on IMO, trust me India will be with in Top 3 positions.
Take it Spelling Bee, from 2000 onwards Top 3 from Top 5 goes to Indians.
For entry to top Indian Engeneering colleges you need to crack JEE. Can these IMO kids try to compete in JEE?

Erm, if these sample questions are what JEE questions are like, then JEE difficulty is leagues below IMO.

I never know that China is so strong on this before see this thread
during the past 15 times, China got 12times No.1 and 3 times NO.2
A friend of mine had once represented India in the Chemistry Olympiad when it was held at Greece. All he did was self-study after school-hours. Got about ZERO help from any teacher or lecturer in this regard. The City Municipality honoured him AFTER it was reported in a newspaper that he'd secured 2nd Rank in the Olympiad. I'm inclined to say this hasn't changed much at all.
I do not know how true is this. But most national team has state coaching. It is amazing that India has no state coaching for IMO.
I cant answer any of those questions, but I havent touched chemistry for 4 years.
Not exactly comparable, seems like JEE test you on how knowledgeable you are about general science stuff, where as IMO requires only basic math, but tests you on how good your problem solving skill is.
I read some of these JEE questions and I can do some of the questions but I may not get it right. The one example of the IMO question, i have no idea where to begin!Erm, if these sample questions are what JEE questions are like, then JEE difficulty is leagues below IMO.

Info on Wikipedia contradicts lots of the claims here made by the Indians:
The Indian National Mathematical Olympiad is a high school mathematics competition held annually in India since 1989. It is the second tier in the Indian team selection procedure for the International Mathematical Olympiad and is conducted by the Homi Bhaba Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) under the aegis of the National Board of Higher Mathematics (NBHM).
- Students qualifying the INMO are automatically eligible for admission to the B.Sc. (Hons) Mathematics course in the [Chennai Mathematical Institute].
- Since 2008, INMO awardees applying for B. Stat or B. Math courses of the Indian Statistical Institute are directly called for the interview without having to write the written test.
- INMO awardees are also eligible for an NBHM scholarship that currently stands at about Rs. 2500 per month, if they continue their studies in mathematics. They are also offered a 4-year programme of training in Mathematics thru correspondence and periodic contact with a chosen faculty. The programme is also available to INMO awardees who do not pursue an undergraduate degree in Mathematics but have special interest in the subject. They are offered an annual cash award of Rs. 9,000 subject to satisfactory performance in the programme.
- Students who make it to the IMO are eligible for the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) fellowship provided they pursue their studies in the science subjects in India. The fellowship amount stands at Rs. 4000 per month.
- Indian team members who receive a gold, silver or bronze at IMO are given cash awards by the NBHM of Rs. 5,000, Rs. 4,000 and Rs. 3,000 respectively.
- All travel expenses for the IMO Training Camp and all expenses for the IMO are borne by the Ministry of HRD,Government of India.

There weren't any a decade ago. Students simply took the Olympiads just to get a measure of how well they could do in IIT-JEE examinations.
I did not even know there was a college called Chennai Mathematical InstituteThe very fact that none of the Indians here even mentioned this exam is a testament that it is not very famous. All Indians swear by JEE. I don't know how many know about INMO.
