Eagerly waiting for 2 big events
1. Unveiling of INS Arihant to the world.. (I wish they show it firing a BM for a full range K15/K4 shot :super: )

2. A proper send off to INS Viraat. We should give her a very good send off and give her credit for her service. A national memorial honoring INS Viraat must be made and also Naval History museum should have some solid pictures, videos and interactive holograms. I hope they keep some parts of Viraat as souvenirs in the museum.

I hope people know this is the memorial of INS Vikrant (decommissioned) after so long finally in Mumbai

quote
On the eve of the 67th Republic Day, the memorial to India's first aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant, was today unveiled at Naval Dockyard opposite Lion Gate in South Mumbai.

"The Vikrant Memorial is a living testimony of deep gratitude to a majestic ship from all those who served on her as she created the legacy as pioneer of Indian Navy's Aviation Arm," a defence release said.

"The memorial is a sculpture created with pieces of metal recovered from the ship-breaking yard and belonged to the decommissioned ship," it said.

INS Viraat also deserves such a treatment for all of us to remember her service to the nation..

2 things rarely get a proper farewell in India
  1. Cricket team captain
  2. Aircraft career
lets hope someone comes up with a proper plan and money to preserve Viraat. It would be a real shame if it ends up at a scrapyard like Vikrant.
The best way to "retire" the Viraat is to tow her out and use her for a live firepower exercise. A true warrior's sendoff

.
May I suggest the official theme for the IFR?

That beach assault T-72 kissing the wet sand and their highnesses off the rocky shore reminded of this theme for some reason.

Great thread, great pics! Looking forward to more!

gee, a mighty ship that once protected Indian seas, finding final resting place in those very waters, perhaps right thing.
But again with so many memories associated with the ship, i still feel preserving it for all and sundry to come and see and admire it, seems like the best thing for the boat.
i say this because i have seen several old Indian Railway men who worked in erstwhile steam sheds and how sad they felt when those locos were sold as scrap after finishing their coal lives. the worst part was that the gas torch butchery was performed in those very sheds and in front on those very eyes, who once took care of them. Its hard to believe, how some piece of machinery can have an emotional attachment with men who work with them.

CM of andhra Pradesh has asked to give viraat as a gift to AP and the state govt will make it as meusium in vishakapatnam, but the central govt has not taken any decision, they are busy in calculating money they will get by selling it as a scrap, we should learn from Americans, it should be turned as a live training centre for rookie naval cadets who in the future will be posted on the AC
