International community should listen to Myanmar voices

By Ai Jun Source:Global Times Published: 2018/9/4 22:38:41

Western media have launched a collective attack on Nay Pyi Taw lately. Right after a Myanmarese court sentenced two Reuters journalists to seven years in jail Monday, CNN, the Guardian and quite a few other mainstream Western media asserted this was a blow to press freedom, judicial independence and democracy. Some even claimed the sentence had sparked a backlash in the international community.

These media one-sidedly alleged the two journalists were arrested for investigating "a massacre of Rohingya Muslims," skirting around or questioning the court's reason: Both violated a state secrets act. The journalists had consistently tried to obtain confidential government information that could have been passed on "to enemies of the state and terrorist organizations," according to Myanmarese media.

In a Google search of "Myanmar," one will find 17 results about this story on the Google news homepage as of press time, but none of them is from Myanmar media. Regardless of whether the West's accusations are right or wrong, why do they tend to touch lightly on the voices inside Myanmar?

Before the judgment, the Myanmar Times reported that "the court's decision will be based on the rule of law." Other nations should respect the country's situation and its rule of law.

The West has been exerting increasing pressure on Nay Pyi Taw over the Rohingya crisis. On August 27, the UN Human Rights Council issued a report on the Rohingya minority, calling for genocide charges against the Myanmar military. But Myanmar's government rejected the findings in the report, noting it undermines the Myanmar government's efforts to bring peace, national reconciliation and development to the country.

Zaw Htay, Myanmar's main government spokesman, said the country has "zero tolerance to any human rights violation" and had set up a Commission of Enquiry to respond to "false allegations" made by the UN and "other international communities," adding "If there is any case against human rights, just give us strong evidence, record and date so that we can take legal action," Reuters reported. But Western media have so far not yet provided acceptable evidence, record and date.

No country can replace Myanmar in resolving the Rohingya crisis. The West should take the nation's actual situation into consideration, instead of intimidating it in the name of the "international community."

Who exactly is the so-called "international community?" The answer can be interesting.

In 2001, the Washington-led "international community" which invaded Afghanistan included the US, the UK, Germany, France etc. In 2003, the Washington-led "international community" that invaded Iraq included the US, the UK, Poland, Australia etc. In 2011, the Washington-led "international community" that invaded Libya included the US, the UK, Germany, France etc. The so-called international community is nothing more than a dozen countries. How can they represent more than 190 countries worldwide? Perhaps such an "international community" is more like a gang.

Being a small country is not supposed to be the reason for others to refuse to hear what Myanmar has to say. If the West believes itself fair-and-square, it's time to stop being deaf to Myanmar voices.

totally agree with this. they ever never listen Myanmar voice and never try to understand Myanmar's effort to solve this crisis. In current incident , they hide the actual reason of why reportor charging up to 7 years and repeatly propagated what they want. they tried to get confidential data of polices which stationed across northern rakhine state. that's why they got arrested. but the western official said they have right to know the infomation. so why they still need to arrest Snowden.? it's too obviously they just want to put pressure on Myanmar as they want to do. nothing else. if there is no reason , they will create.

Myanmar should go steadfast with its no tolerance to terrorism and separatism policy. That's the only optimum policy that will bring benefits. Just as the West is deaf to Myanmar's voices, Myanmar should be equally deaf to the Western barking.

Perhaps they should leave the prison crippled or mentally retarded. Plus, they should never be allowed to operate in Myanmar.

Also, Myanmar needs to strengthen its regional relations further, with China and Russia, and inside the ASEAN. Outside, political and religio-sectarian voices do not matter.

Burma will pay the price in due time.

that's what we need right now. we're not their colony anymore and they dont need to order what to do. if they really want to solve this crisis , they must cooperate with us and understand the roof of this problem instead of just blaming on one side.

it's too bad that gov let some so called NGOs which funded by famous trouble maker like Open Society Foundations of Soros do openly their works. there are over 50 NGOs including one Journalism School funded by western foundations like USAids and Open Society Foundations. these reportors come from that school. They had been brainwashed and trained like a spy.

i think gov should revise their policy regarding with NGOs and their scope of works including inflow of their income.

Better to have executed them and hung their heads . Guaranteed no more NGO will cause trouble.

As it appears, a political and economic solution to the crisis through negotiations (as suggested by China and other sane regional states, including the ASEAN) is not suitable to the Western interests. Hence, the US, while busy with killing civilians elsewhere and supporting terrorists in Syria, turns extreme sensitive to the "plight" of the Myanmar separatists. The US would like to see the low-scale warfare and instability to continue in Myanmar. It is very difficult to anticipate any constructive approach by the US at the moment.

Myanmar would be better to learn from Putin's play-book and declare all foreign NGOs as foreign agents, and require them extreme vetting and no non-Myanmar funding. It should be easy for Myanmar government to frame them indict them with various fraud, embezzlement, threat to national security, playing to the hands of foreign interests, etc. And, indeed, they have been doing all these, and more.

Better to have executed them and hung their heads . Guaranteed no more NGO will cause trouble.

At least indict them with treason and slap life-terms. Then, the remaining worms will be running so quick back to their source of funding.

Both India and China are on Myanmar's Side . Its one of the only(correct me if I am wrong) country where in views of India and China do not diverge broadly. So any hopes of military adventurism is pure fantasy and any Sanctions in UN will be vetoed by China . Only option for western countries is to unilaterally impose sanctions and that won't have much impact in Myanmar as following are Myanmar's Largest Trading partners :

China, Thailand, India, Singapore and Japan. None will support sanctions.

it should be. bro should eliminate them one by one. especially in the journalism fields. also women rights, children rights etc NGOs. actually they do nothing about rights. all they do is just to release the supporting statement in time if someone make any movements against the gov. In the rest of the time , they are enjoying life by riding the good car , living in big house and making some compaigns in order to get some funds. that's all.

even in this incident, 64 organizations released the statements demanding to release reportors immediately. the total staff of all these NGOs is not more than 200 and all are funded by west.

Gov also know about it. but their response regarding with this issue is too slow . perhaps they scared of mounting more pressure by the west. should let only the ones who can take responsiblity and contrubute the development of the nation.

i think that's why Myanmar can resist the pressure for that long. i think Myanmar should make to strengthen the relationship with regional power instead of seeking helps in the west. the actions by the west during the crisis are the bitter answer for our gov to revise their foreign policies.

Stay strong and do what best for your country. We have these NGO's problem too and they all have ill intention and government should not be easy on them.
