Srinagar, May 5: An Army Major and a rifleman were killed in a gun fight with Kashmiri militants outside the town of Bandipore, about 60-km north of here, on Wednesday, officials said.
The militants are reported to have fled into nearby woods after targeting the Army officer and the soldier and since it is raining heavily in the area, the Army reinforcements from the nearby camps are finding it hard to negotiate the rugged terrain in their effort underway to take on the fleeing gunmen, reports said.
The defence spokesperson, Lt. Col. J.S. Brar, confirmed it, though indirectly. He said, “The operation was still on till reports last came in. The area is mountainous and forested and it has been raining heavily in the last two days.”
The fighting broke out early on Wednesday, hours after the troops laid siege to Chiltibandi village to flush out insurgents reported hiding there. Based on specific intelligence, an operation was launched in the forested area of Chiltibandi on Tuesday night.
“As the troops were closing in on the target area, they were fired upon by terrorists resulting in injuries to one officer and one jawan who later succumbed to their injuries,” he said and identified them as Major Yogendra Rajbar and Rifleman Uttam Singh.
