I would disagree mate.
Why AK's are termed more prefferd weapon of choice still. Excalibur is nothing but Try to Improve version of AK's. Again Gorilla warfare + 400 mtr of effective range is all required.

Only in jungle warfare,where the engagements never take place ranges beyond 40-50 meter..................in fact,on most occasions,the ranges are even shorter!!But for conventional warfare in open fields,with clear field of view,the engagements take place at ranges beyond 300 meter and for engaging targets at those kind of ranges,you need a rifle that can shoot straight and shoot hard.And for the rifle to be able to shoot straight to long distances,it needs to have a long barrel - laws of physics my dear,can't alter them.

Avg range of most exchanges 300 to 500 mtr. Its tricky to create a balance between handling and range. 16 to 18 inch barrel considered adequate. Hence Bullpup rifles are the way to go.


What Army and ADRE may be trying to do here is to replace INSAS and AK's with Excalibur and Excalibur AR, following common parts hence logistics, field repairs can be made easier.

True,but 16" would be a bit too short for 5.56.If you need to go for 16" barrel,then you should standardize on the 6.5 Grendel.The rest is correct.

1998 attack never happened. Rest i am quite unsure of.

Replacing INSAS Rifles with New Weapon

No proposal for replacement of all INSAS Rifles given to our forces is under consideration of the Governments at present. However, weapons like Assault Rifles (7.62 x 39 mm), Sniper Rifles, X-95 Assault Rifles, Glock Pistols, MP-5 Sub Machine Guns and Carbines have been provided to CAPFs. Further, 67,117 nos. Additional Assault Rifles (7.62 x 39 mm) have been authorized for CRPF Bns deployed in LWE & J&K region against replacement of 5.56 mm INSAS Rifles. Different weapons have their unique features and strengths.

Modernization of weapons to security forces is a continuous process as per operational requirement of the concerned security force.

This was stated by the Minister of State for Home Affairs, Shri Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary in a written reply to a question by Shri Palvai Govardhan Reddy in the Rajya Sabha today.
