VISAKHAPATNAM: 'INS Kadmatt', the second indigenous stealth anti-submarine warfare corvette, will be commissioned by Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral R K Dhowan at naval dockyard here today.

A unique feature of the ship is the high level of indigenisation incorporated in the production, accentuating the national objective of 'Make in India'.The ship has many state-of-the-art equipment which include the rail-less helo traversing system and foldable hangar door for the integral ASW helicopter which not only increases the strike capability of the ship, but also enhances the detection capability manifold, a defence release stated today.About 90 per cent of the ship is indigenous.

It has been designed by the Navy's in-house organisation, the Directorate of Naval Design, and constructed by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited, Kolkata.'Kadmatt' is the latest indigenous ship after 'Shivalik' class, 'Kolkata' class and 'INS Kamorta' where in a plethora of weapons and sensors have been integrated to provide a 'Common Operational Picture (COP)'.As an ASW corvette, the ship carries on the legacy of her predecessorINS Kadmatt(P 78), which served the Navy for 24 years from December 23, 1968 to November 30, 1992.The ship's weapons and sensors suite is predominantly indigenous and showcases the nation's growing capability in this niche area, it added.

Upon commissioning, the ship will form part of the eastern fleet which shoulders the responsibility of safeguarding the eastern seaboard of India. This second ship of Project 28 has a low radio, acoustic, magnetic and Infra Red(IR) signature owing to a 'X' shaped hull form, raft mounted engines and an IR suppression system, the release stated. The IR suppression system reduces the heat emitted by the ship reducing the infrared signature thereby defending the ship from heat seeking missiles.

With a displacement of 3500 tonnes, the ship spans 109 meters in length and 14 meters at the beam and is propelled by four diesel engines to achieve speeds in excess of 25 knots with an endurance of 3450 nautical mile.

They will get Barak 8 during first refit.

Every major warship inducted post 1997 will get Barak 8
The only exception being Saryu class OPV which despite being capable of being fitted with Barak 8, wont have this missile

I will say it again
Only the Indian Navy will classify a 3500 Ton warship as a corvette
With the kind of equipment it is slated to get in future like Barak 8 and Brahmos replacing Klub N
It would probably be classified as a Destroyer by the navy of Atoumi Quwat

Again, too lightly armed. No anti ship missiles. No air defence missiles.

If the idea is to create a lighly armed but highly specialised ASW platform with long endurance, why not room for 2 ASW helicopters to ensure round the clock coverage in wartime? I dont get this part at all.

Even our Shivalik are too lighly armed.
