What's new

INS Godavari (F20) to be decommissioned next month.

So sad, I remember touring this ship many many years ago as a child on one of it's goodwill visits. I even got a cap with the ships name and symbol emblazoned upon it, but my brother ruined it
Maybe you get another cap when another ship with this name get commissioned.

. .
32 Years is not very long. It still can serve as a patrol ship for at least till 2020 with another refit. Or may be as an training ship in either coast guard or navy. Please don't scrap it.
Come on guys, who are we to be prescribing operational procedueres to the proffesionals? I'm sure the IN knows the capbilities and functionality left in their own ship- if they are phasing her out I'm sure they have their reasons. We can't constantly think we know better when it comes to specific like this- it I see it in every thread where the ICG is commisioning a new ship and a bunch of members are saying they should be upgunned with AhSM and the like.

Good Morning Sir
Yes, you are right.
But when I see it's age => 32 years.
And some American and British ships , nearing about 40 and in service, I still see 4-5 years left in it. And one more reason is, its very painful and sad when they are scrapped.
Also China has given a refit to about half a dozen Type 053 frigates and converted it into patrol vessels for Coast Guard with about 8-10 years left in them.

And yup, I don't want the Coast Guard vessels to get any missiles, but yes they should get rig of CRN 91 guns in bigger ships and get a proper naval gun of 50mm or upward .

I think Godavari no longer meet the modern requirements of the Navy
Hence being decommissioned
I heard that it will cost Rs 400 cr to upgrade the ship to the level of Brahmaputra, which could have allowed the ship to serve for 12 more years
But Navy decided that funds are better utilized in upgrading Kilos

Bro you got a source for that info (specifically the 12 years part)....to me that sounds like the basic hull is estimated at 12 years more life which fits well with what others have been saying in this thread too.

INS Godavari (F20) to be decommissioned next month.

After 32 years of service, INS Godavari (F20), the lead ship of Godavari class of frigates will be finally put to rest. She was involved in Op-Cactus back in 1988 when she successfully intercepted the Cargo ship hijacked by the mercenaries and rescued the hostages off the Sri Lankan coast.

She was one of the first vessels in Indian Navy to receive Barak-1 SAM System. Six months back, she donated her AD weapons (Barak-1 SAMs and AK-630 CIWS) to aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya.

Ohhhh my god. We had a capability to build such a nice boat 32 years ago?

I disagree. There were better uses for the ship including the ICG.

At the very least these ships should've been given to Bangladesh or Mauritius or Sri Lanka or Myanmar as gifts.

One question,

Why not building a version of Saryu class APOV as corvette equipped with Klub & Barak-1, and then give these to BD & Vietnam.

Why not converting Kamotra class into a light frigate for export?

Thanks but no thanks....were planning to build these: type 056 corvettes in Bangladesh in a couple of years.

These are not frigates.

Neither is the saryu class, which aren't even corvettes but just off shore patrol vessells. The facts are in a couple of years we'll be building our own corvettes and more.

The main things is though, our armed forces have a policy of not using indian designed/built equipment....so there is no question of us buying a armed version of the saryu class or anything.....you coulds still try to sell it to the viets though.

32 years is a long time, and newer/better platforms are joining the Indian navy all the time. I hope this ship can be converted into a maritime museum in one of our coastal cities - one of the lesser tragedies of our time was when INS Vikrant was eventually scrapped instead of being made a museum ship, for lack of money and vision. These ships are a part of our maritime history and heritage - and can continue to play a major role by educating and informing the public at large.

Funny thing is your type 56 "corvettes" are going to be much smaller than our Saryu "OPVs".

Same goes for comparing your "frigates" with our "corvettes".

There is definitely a mile of difference regarding classifications for these two navies. No one in India said our Saryu class is a corvette as it stands...but it would probably easily be one in Bangladesh Navy :P. There is definitely enough room on board for it to be operationalised to a corvette style armament level.
