Industry seeks ‘Made in Pakistan’ electric vehicles

hmmm...it sounds like these guys are asking for cutting the tax on imported CKDs. Basically, their understanding of 'manufacturing' is actually assembling, which is just a continuation of what we're already doing.

It's clear now that the foreign OEMs either don't want to transfer technology to Pakistan, or our industry is too risk adverse, or our regulators aren't cutthroat enough.

In any case, the right approach would be to (as with all things these days) is to set-up a joint-venture with Turkish and/or Chinese companies to develop critical inputs for our own EV brands.

We set-up domestic OEMs for EVs, and then export our own EVs to other markets. That's the way forward IMO.

This is the only way. A public-private venture can disrupt the auto industry in Pakistan and boost Pakistan’s industrial capacity.

Pakistan is in a very unfortunate place due to its location. With China and India around you, the best thing this industry can do is to catch up with the own market. At least try to catch up with the electric vehicle glut and design cars instead of wasted licensing. You are not developing a 5th generation warplane, its just a car.

If a cheaper EV design become available then i believe people will adopt it. For now we should try to introduce Electric motor bikes and rickshaws which populate our roads the most. It should be an easy endeavour for our industry as we have a good base to manufacture two wheelers. As for running cars and trucks on electricity we should wait untill tech matures enough to be available at cheap rates. Our foucs until then should be on hybrid vehicles which is a more mature tech. We can at least adopt a policy to replace 1300cc and 1800cc cars with hybrid model considering they are already out of normal persons reach any way.
The main benefit of a hybrid car is regeneration, and thus better efficiency from gasoline.

But hybrids are way more trickier, and expensive to build than either internal combustion, and pure electric cars, as they require both to have powertrains for both systems.

Mehrans, and 150cc from Japanese would be really hard to beat on price because they are such bare bone cost optimised products. Their pretty much only purpose is completely obliterate competition in markets like Pakistan.

A single piston 150cc motor can be made with just 12 machined parts, which is extreme by standards of the industry. I saw few Mehrans when I been to Pakistan. They felt almost as if they were made out of tin foil.

Of course Japanese cannot even fantasise of selling this stuff in the West.

Wel now that Mehran is gone so eventually they will have to replace it. This is the best time to introduce an option with incentives by govt to boost its sales. Rather than bringing models like Prince or Bravo we should focus on EV models or at least hybrid models for now.
Think of these as being more suitable as first steps in EV business:

they will break on the rough terrain.
Why? EVs are by far, far more rugged than piston engine cars. They are almost completely insensitive to vibration. There is literally 3 major moving parts: the motor, the wheel, and the driveshaft in between them.

The only ever issue with an EV I saw in my life was a failed motor seal, and therefor the motor on an electric scooter. And it was an easily avoidable issue if the maker did the right design decision of separating the load bearing from from the seal.

Battery and the electric motor which is more crucial than the battery
Electric motors are super easy to do. Basically you only need a lot of copper (which Pakistan has in abundance in Baluzhistan,) and electric steel, which Pakistan already makes. Everything else is very basic metalworking like sandcasting, and simple machining.

i dont know but i am petrol head. you seem to know more than i.

but our jahil awam want mehran and corrola only

Do you think our auto industry can be relied upon? They will ask to raise duties but will produce third class quality stuff that will not available without extortion.

The whole model of what we call 'manufacturing' needs to change. These industrialists seeks government protection but then with lazy dishonesty, they fleece people by making third class products.

Thanks for this post. Some posters are just too uncritical and post whatever comes to their mind.

No, thanks. We don't want tin ka dabba at 2-3x the price. The more Big 3,stay away from EVs the better for mango people.

EV are battery powered.
Other essentials are tyres, body, glass, headlights and camera, brakes

Import the battery and the other items can be made in Pakistan and cars can be assembled in Pakistan.
Unlike fuel cars where engines and other moving parts are required and need to be imported everything
There is a motor as well

. .
Pakistan can make 100% parts for the electric cars. Just that reducing the recharging time is trickiest thing I believe.
