Indonesian Navy wants to prolong the operating life of its 6 Van Speijk class Frigates

.
The 150m frigate plan was reported on the news few months ago. This could be heavy frigate or maybe destroyer, there's no detail explanation.
I dont get is, there is no frigate in world that is of 150 m, even GCS is of 147 meter, P-17 A would be around same.

.
150 meter frigate ? Or Destroyer?

Even P-17A not going to be a 150 meter frigate.

It might be a destroyer, they maybe just name it a frigate to avoid any further question. By naming the vessel a frigate, it will create an impression that it is not a big project. Personally, I doubt that news, I believe we will try to design 105 M Frigate, not 150 M.

Why should we design another 105m frigate? we already have Sigma 10514.

What's so different between 147m and 150m?

Why not..? Increase the number and also learn how to build a frigate first. Even we havent yet designed any corvette. By designing a light frigate, it has already been a huge achievement made by our shipbuilding industry.

Doesn't make sense. We already secured license to build 20 units of 105m Sigma 10514. 2 units will be completed in 2017. If we want to increase 105m population, we will just build the Sigma. From this experience, we will get the knowhow to build proper frigates. If we want to get the 150m frigate in lets say 2020, we will have to start the design process from now.

Just like Sigma class, build a small one first before making a bigger one ........... :D

If Damen Shipyard started from designing a corvette and ends up with using similar design for frigate, so why not us do similar....? We can start from light frigate into heavy frigate by using similar design. I believe we will use modular system as well.

I agree. but we already have 90m Sigma, and today we are in the process of building our 1st and 2nd 105m Sigma with Damen assistance. Within 2 or 3 years, PT.PAL will have adequate experience to build frigates.

When i say we design & build 150m frigate, doesn't mean that we will design completely new concept that will take years and years to complete. With Damen assistance, this could be "Sigma" 150m, but we will retain the Intelectual property for this design. We can build and export this ship as we wish. :D

Bro'.. I think it doesn't matter whatever it's calling about, since each countries will have different classifications according to their own version., Just look at to the Japanese Navy, all of their combatant ships is classified as destroyers. Even De Zeven Provincien class, due to their size and weapons capability, is can be categorized as destroyers, but the Dutch Navy just refer it as a frigate.. So, whatever its would be named, is back to their Navy's rules and classifications..

Was there a tender for purchasing corvette? I need to ask this to give a further comment about the procedurement.
If there was no tender, and Vietnam government had to buy with negotiation , then it is like you have to buy whatever served , without considering your need. Sometimes its in the hands of supplier.

If there was a tender, maybe Viet navy preffered less armed systems to train personal at 1st,because more advanced systems require continous training, and each personal may have to be trained not only in a single manner.

Thanks for your insights my friend.

There was no tender issued for those procurememt. However, many sources said Komsomolsk offered the original Project 20382 (Steregushchy variant without the VLS) to compete against the Gepard but it lost the bid.

The common explanation was that Viet Nam no longer induct new and “unproven” system because of its bad history with the BPS-500 project. But this doesn’t explain why we decided to go for the Sosna-R armed Palma which is new and “unproven” at that time.

Your explanation about acquiring simple platform first for training purposes makes a lot of sense, and I always believed that the first 2 Gepard makes good training ship. But I just don’t understand why the next 4 Gepards are ordered when they look overpriced and weak in the firepower department. As Indos said, we do not have the budget and luxury to buy that many “training” ships. We lack proper naval hulls above 2000 tons and can’t just spend our limited budget on these underpowered Gepards. Well this is just my personal opinion from my limited knowledge.

BTW, are you a Turkish national living in Viet Nam?

Sorry Indonesian friends for hi-jacking your thread, just realized that now. On topic: Your Sigma frigates are armed with 24 Mica VL??? Just realized this now from that model.

@Carlosa, our ones only armed with 12 right?

Yes as far as I know, the Viet Sigmas have the basic 12 Mica VLS.

I totally agree with the following, there is something fishy about the Gepard story:

I dont know how many Mica VLS that ours has, I believe it is just 12, but this youtube video looks very good :)

The Indonesian frigates will be equipped with a variant of the Thales TACTICOS 300 combat management suite, a Rheinmetall Defence Millennium 35 mm close-in weapon system (CIWS), a Thales SMART-S Mk 2 surveillance radar, and a 12-cell vertical-launch air-defence system. The ships will also be equipped with six 324 mm torpedo tubes.

Nope, the news is right, TNI does have a plan to build 150 meter long ship that weight arround 8500 dwt, ask madoka for more detail, but i doubt she have the time now since she's bussy with her boy friend :)
