The United States is to sell eight Apache helicopters to Indonesia in a sign of strengthening ties aimed at boosting regional security, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Thursday.
After talks with Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa, Clinton said the US administration had “informed Congress of the potential sale of eight AH-64D Apache Longbow helicopters to the Indonesian government.”

“This agreement will strengthen our comprehensive partnership and help enhance security across the region,” she told reporters, after they met for their third US-Indonesia joint commission.
The administration of President Barack Obama is making a key policy pivot to boost ties in the Asia-Pacific region, as it seeks to try to fend off China’s influence, and Clinton visited Jakarta earlier this month.

The top US diplomat did not give a figure for how much the sale of the Boeing-made Apaches to the Indonesian military was worth, but the Jakarta Post has reported that the deal has been in the works for some time.

Hailing their growing ties, Clinton said trade between the two nations topped $26 billion last year, while “investments in transportation, energy, and infrastructure are creating jobs and supporting economic growth.”

The United States was also spending some $600 million over the next five years to fund “clean energy development, child health and nutrition programs, and efforts to help make Indonesia’s government more transparent and open,” Clinton said.

Indonesia and the United States had built a “strong foundation,” she said, and alluding to tensions in the South China Seas added: “One of our most important concerns is promoting peace and stability in the Asia Pacific.”

Jakarta and Washington had a “comprehensive partnership,” Natalegawa agreed, adding he wanted “to reinforce and recall and reaffirm the fact that the importance of Indonesia-US relations extends beyond the bilateral.

“Our two countries now have worked very closely in a very productive and very mutually beneficial way, not only bilaterally, but increasingly within the regional setting as well.”

Another illogical decision wasteful procurement. Indonesia needs Radars and SAM Batteries rather than MBT and Apaches. If you can't detect Enemy on the Radars and nothing to shoot it down these German MBTs and Apaches are useless procurement for Indonesia.

Why don't they just purchase material from China and Russia. I mean atleast they don't sell things with political strings attached.

Personally I believe Indonesia would be great candidate for JF-17.

I mean like come-on no strings attached, and perhaps even Transfer of Technology. A light-weight multirole fighter.

Kind of curious why Indonesia hasn't bought any JF-17's.

Indonesia is back in American Block, the current defense minister and government has turned pro US.

Those 4-7 Flankers su-27/su-30 Indonesia procured, are not happy with it and alot of complaints. Number of F-16s are available in Storage with alot of life left in them and Lockheed Martin is fast in upgrades rolling out customized F-16s compared to PAC/CAC. That is why Indonesian Air Force is buying F-16s. Yes there are strings attached and perhaps no AMRAAMs but its indonesian government political decision.

Sir, can you tell us what radar systems Indonesia currently possess and what they should acquire? Sir, could you also name the adversary that can potentially threaten Indonesia at the moment?

Sir, current Indonesia government is accused of being very 'soft' by many Indonesian friends of mine. They hope for a more assertive and visionary government in the next term. At the same time, can you name another country that operates Russian Yakhont, French Exocet, American Harpoon and Chinese C-705/etc as anti ship missiles? To me that looks like a county which never puts "all their eggs in one basket".

As the current attack helicopters in the Indonesian inventory are all of Russian origin, maybe that is why they are purchasing American attack helicopters. They have plans for an indigenous light attack helicopter in mind as well (and shown its designs and specifications already). Perhaps, in order to diversify further, they could obtain some French or Western European, or South African, attack helicopters.

This purchase alone still does not qualify as a move towards the US camp considering it is one of the few countries to have major weapons systems from own national industry, as well as co-developed weapons with other partners, and imports from Russia, Western Europe, China and USA, to name a few sources.

Sir, think neutrally without any political bias. Indonesia is already the largest economy and perhaps the tacitly acknowledge leader of ASEAN. This important region is home to the Malacca, Sunda and other straits that sees a large percentage of global maritime trade including the transport of energy resources to East Asian industrial economies. For Indonesia to assert its presence in this region, would it be wise to rely on a fighter aircraft that has been rejected by the PLAAF, and that requires the importation of engines from Russian Federation, followed by assembly in China or Pakistan, followed by transportation to Indonesia, when Indonesia is already co-developing KF-X/IF-X 'stealth' planes and has almost equally good relations with Russia, USA, Western Europe and China so that all options for sourcing fighter jets are on the table at any time?

How absolutely pointless a purchase..
If Indonesia did infact want attack choppers, it should have gotten those with some serious range on them ..like the Mi-35.. which would have doubled as a transport helicopter..or the MH-60L type..which can be armed with ATGM's ,Rocket pods and guns..while still having transport capability.

Its Dense jungles and many isles warrant a helicopter able to land and rearm itself.

A divided Asia is an excellent business affair for the US war criminals who could then sell a lot of weapons of mass destruction to Asian countries. A united Asia is against the interest of the US given that this would decrease their influence in Asia and reduce their weapons sales. Thus the US war criminals are disseminating hate and division among Asian countries by portraying China as a threat and by blaming its own failures-unemployment, financial crisis etc- on the usual scapegoat, China. The US war criminals are selling weapons to Indonesia by highlighting the Malaysian challenge and vice versa. Same game for India which is buying everything, a Japan versus Korea is also good for US weaqpons sales thus a divided Asia is a weak Asia thereby an opportunity for the US to maintain its influence and hegemony despite a declining economic influence in the Asian region.
Actually the US war criminals are the greatest WMD disseminator of the world, they are also instigating war and doom in Muslim countries and in Asia. They are behind the Philippinos decision to challenge and bully China while the Phillipinos Government is trying hard to restore its relationship with China in view of attracting Chinese investment and promoting exports to China. The US war criminals are also behind the Japanese Imperial War criminals to nationalize the Daioyu island to make China pays its support to the Syrian and Iranian government. Not to mention the fact that the US war criminals are behind the anti Islam movie, the killing of innocent women and children in Palestine, Iraq and Afganistan, the so called Arab revolution which had killed innocent civilians, the murder of Colonel Khadhafi, the recent shameful murder of martyr Osama Ben Laden who had been executed while he was unarmed and while he was rendering himself, the covert war in Yemen and Pakistan killing innocent civilians, the actual financial crisis in Europe etc. Of course the US war criminals are blaming most of these on China, the usual and easy scapegoat, bashing and bullying China is more easy than facing its own incompetencies and decline. According to the US war criminals, a third World War would be good for the US to restore its supremacy and relegate China far away to prevent it from becoming the next world number one superpower in 2020.

why can't you right a single post without global conspiracy theory???they are selling few gunships to Indonesia, which is not even an adversary against china.

Dude, you really need a break from the forum. Go on, take a trip down to Palau or Micronesia or something. Oceanic breeze would relax your mind big time.

You're seriously not telling me that Indonesia will attack the Commies with just 8 gunships... are you?

According to the US war criminals, a third World War would be good for the US to restore its supremacy and relegate China far away to prevent it from becoming the next world number one superpower in 2020.

Actually, from the looks of it, the third world war is likely to be started with countries that think like you more than the Americans or Jews.

Stop being up-beat about every little thing and trust me, the world will be a peaceful place.

Ploughing down everything, rioting, attacking, killing, suicide bombings etc won't get you anywhere.

Indonesia has a requirement of 32 Radars out of which 16-20 have been deployed in the past which are not that powerful [would need a little digging regarding radars]. Also Indonesia is buying unknown number of AN-TPS 78 Solid-State Tactical Mobile Radar Systems. They are trying to acquire german tanks and apaches against Malaysia and the Borneo dispute and for all small disputes which they think are dispute.

I can image throwing their hard earned cash to procure useless expensive apaches and german tanks. Lastly Flankers are i'll equip and poorly maintained F-5 despite being upgraded previous have no punch and F-16 are also ill equip and needs much needed upgrades new MLU F-16s are not approved yet. The Top procurements always should be ground based Radars and SAM Batteries until Air Force receives more Flankers.

I think the same as you stated - in the bold part. And it is more or less a political purchase to please the Americans.
