Indonesia has received its first shipment of Chinese made QW-3 missiles

Indonesia has received its first shipment of Chinese made QW-3 shoulder fired, surface to air missiles. These are 23 kg (51 pound), heat sensing weapons that can hit aircraft at up to 5,000 meters (16,400 feet) and up to eight kilometers (five miles) away. Top speed is 2,700 kilometers an hour (750 meters a second) and targets as low as four meters (13 feet) from the ground can be hit. The missile, in its container, is 2.1 meters (6.5 feet) long.

The QW-3 is in the same class as the U.S. Stinger. The QW series began development in the 1990s, as China sought to develop missiles to replace it HN series of Russian SAM-7 clones. China still manufactures and exports HN-5s, as a low cost solution to your anti-aircraft needs.

But the QW-3 is the top of the line and has been in service for over five years. China is aggressively marketing its weapons to Indonesia, offering low prices and no strings.

Why would Indonesia buy shoulder fired SAMs? Sounds suspicious.

I can understand if it's GAM or OPM. But Indonesian TNI? Don't they realized some of these shoulder fired SAMs could be in the hands of OPM or GAM?

The TNI should have spend more money buying warships to guard the western part of Indonesia against the INS.

The QianWei-3 (QW-3, or Vanguard 3) is the surface-to-air missile first revealed during the 2002 Zhuhai Air Show. Unlike other man-portable air defence missiles in the world, which commonly use the passive IR-homing guidance, the QW-3 is fitted with a unique nose-mounted semi-active laser guidance seeker. The laser guidance enables the QW-3 missile to be almost immune to the heat flares dispensed by the target and solar/ground heat. The laser guidance has a relatively low rate of tracking (15 degree/second) in comparison to conventional IR-homing missiles. However, this disadvantage is compensated by the fact that aircraft is also much less manoeuvrable when flying at ultra-low altitude.

it is not shoulder fired MANPAD...it must be fired from bipod or tripod, due to its weight.
