It is no secret that Prime Minister Narendra Modi admires Japan and its work ethics. He shares an excellent chemistry with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his visit to Tokyo on July 3-4 could finally see signing of the historic civil nuclear deal between the two countries. Japan could also commit to support mega infrastructure projects in India during this visit, Modi's first outside South Asia since he became the Prime Minister. In a candid interview with ET, Japan's Ambassador to India Takeshi Yagi indicated that intense negotiations are ongoing and civil nuclear deal may be signed during the July trip. Yagi said that the Abe government is ready to contribute the Modi sarkar's dream of new generation infrastructure in India.

What could be the biggest outcome of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's trip to Japan?

Currently, the two sides are holding intense negotiations to conclude the civil nuclear deal during the trip. There are three weeks still for the visit and we may finish negotiations in the meantime to have the deal. Key rounds of negotiations have been held on the civil nuclear agreement since PM Abe visited India this January. We are hopeful of an early conclusion. Modi's visit will take the bilateral strategic partnership to the next level.

Which are the other areas of partnership to look forward to during this trip?

Japan is ready to contribute to fulfilling the Modi-led BJP government's dream of economically transforming India. Japan is ready to support to create high-speed railway, next generation infrastructure, clean-up of the Ganga river, agri-industry, connectivity with the ASEAN and other connectivity projects besides general manufacturing sectors.

We also hope that the Indian government will expedite work on corridors like Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor and freight corridor. Our defence partnership now involves joint defence exercises besides NSA-level dialogue. Negotiations are ongoing with regard to purchase of amphibious aircraft from Japan and setting up of a joint manufacturing unit in India, and may be export such aircraft in future.

How do you view China's rise and the recent developments in the East China and South China Sea regions?

India-Japan partnership cannot be viewed from the prism of China. Beijing is among largest trading partners of Tokyo and we have investments in China.

Thanks ..I have very high hopes of High speed Golden Quadrilateral project ...Japan can help us immensely in this respect as they are world leaders .

Even if we manage to succeed to get one of the major infrastructure projects going with Japan's help ...it will be transformational for India.

We can take Japan's help to open us north eastern part of India as our gate way to ASEAN .


Japan can also help us in many other key sectors ...

With Japan's help India can indeed transform itself .

Time has come to take " Look East " policy to another level.

I do not have lot of hopes with regards to nuclear deal as yet .

Japan is the only country which has suffered nuclear attack . They will formalize agreement only when they are 100% satisfied ...

Japan, India near carbon offset deal - The Times of India


TOKYO: Japan plans to agree a carbon offset deal with India, Japanese media reported, citing unnamed government sources, potentially making the south Asian country the largest economy yet to sign up to cut greenhouse gas emissions under a Japanese scheme.
The two are expected to announce plans to accelerate negotiations over Japan's bilateral carbon offset mechanism when Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe welcomes Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Tokyo in early July for annual talks, the Nikkei news agency reported on Monday.
A deal would allow Japanese companies to install carbon-cutting technology in India and in return receive carbon credits under the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) that can be used to offset their own carbon footprint under the country's emissions target or be sold to the Japanese government.
Japan has already signed bilateral agreements with 11 countries including Costa Rica, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Kenya and Mongolia, effectively allowing Japan to outsource its emissions cuts to countries where reducing greenhouse gases is cheaper.
Japan has been increasingly relying on fossil fuels to generate electricity after idling all 48 of its nuclear plants in the aftermath of the 2011 Fukushima disaster, and has found it hard to rein in its carbon emissions.
As a result, Tokyo last year watered down its 2020 emissions target, saying it would allow its greenhouse gas output to grow 3 percent from 1990 levels by the end of the decade, instead of cutting them by a quarter during that period.
