India’s Nirbhay Cruise Missile To Have Turbo Fan Engine

HAL-developed+turbofan+for+Nirbhay.jpg

India’s long range sub sonic cruise missile, Nirbhay. It will have a new small Turbo-Fan engine manufactured by the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE).

“GTRE is presently ground testing an engine for the cruise missile and has not yet come up with its nomenclature. The specifications of the engine are yet to be released. GTRE is based in Bangalore and had earlier built Kaveri I engine that was to be fitted on Indian Air Force’s Tejas light combat aircraft. The Kaveri program was closed as it proved to be underpowered,” DRDO sources told our correspondent.

Nirbhay I can be adapted for naval release by both a surface ship and submarines. It has a range of 1500 kms, weighs 1000 kgs, and its current engine is ramjet technology. It was tested successfully with all parametres matching the standards set by the DRDO in October, 2014.

Four versions of Nirbhay land, ship, air and submarine would be developed and the first land attack cruise missile would be delivered in less than three years,” Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister and DRDO director General Avinash Chanderhad earlier said after the successful test fire last year.

Indigenous engine is very crucial for us to enable to mass produce the Nirbhay which is going to be main stay of our missile inventory .

Let's all future Engine Programs are as successful as this one

we have no formal official input regarding success of Nirbhay engine yet. Yes it is very crucial for it to succeed . To complicate the matter DRDO already went public that Russia has supplied us with 8 engines for Nirbhay ....which is in complete contravention as Nirbhay is 1000km + range missile and nuclear capable one .

we have no choice but to develop engine for Nirbhay successfully . For Nirbhay will be the cheaper indigenous which will form main stay of our missile inventory ..

Indeed if we have to Mass manufacture this thing we need a home grown Engine

I can't beleive these Indian still doubt their ability.

Confusing. The Nirbhay test news had said it ran with a turbofan. Now they are saying ramjet.

Stupid journo. DRDO image itself state that the engine is gas-turbine (of which turbofan is a type). In fact the header of the article also states Turbofan. Ramjet is a completely different beast (Mach 3)

So the correct news is that this is a NEW engine. Did we use an imported engine for the test?

as you see brahmos despite being one of the best in its class has obvious range limitations due to MTCR restrictions .

so India is exploiting Ramjet know how by developing Long Range Cruise missile ...and collaborations with Russians during Brahmos which helped us master ramjet technology will come extremely handy ...

we have been using imported Russian engines for the Nirbhay testing . we had purchased 8 engines. they will be replaced by Indian engines subsequently ...
