India's UN envoy searched for turban at US airport

In a second incident of Indian envoy being insulted in the US, India's permanent representative to the UN Hardeep Puri was held for about half an hour by US authorities at a Texas airport and his turban was forcefully searched. The search was conducted even though Puri informed the authorities

The incident which took place around a couple weeks ago, came to light a day after India Voiced "strong concerns" over the "pat down" frisking of Indian ambassador Meera Shankar at a US airport

On Saturday India summoned US deputy chief of mission Donald Lu and threatened to review privileges granted to US diplomats if such incidents are repeated. India also asked the US to sensitise the authorities at all its airports to cultural and religious sensitivities of foreign diplomats.

Shankar was subjected to the security search at the Jackson-Evers International Airport on Dec 4 when she was about to board a flight to Washington after attending a function at the Mississippi State University.

"India respects diplomatic privileges of foreign diplomats in India and extends diplomatic courtesies to them. Such incidents naturally lead to call for review of privileges and facilities extended in India," the US diplomat was told.

Meh, who cares. The media loves to make mountains out of molehills.

Every Indian citizen is getting searched. These diplomats are not above any other Indian. Either get the rule changed for everyone, or don't cry if you get searched yourself.

Indian envoy to UN told to take off turban at US airport:

After Indian ambassador to the US Meera Shankar was singled out for a hands-on body search at an American airport 10 days ago, it has now emerged that Indian envoy to the United Nations Hardeep Puri's turban underwent the same pat-down experience at the Houston airport in the US two weeks ago.

This despite the airport security being told of his diplomatic status. Sources said Puri was asked to remove his turban while the security searched him.

It is understood the External Affairs ministry has expressed concern about the incident.

Shankar's experience had rattled the External Affairs Ministry last week, with Foreign Minister S M Krishna calling it “unacceptable”.

More so, because American diplomats to India, ministry sources said, were accorded total immunity from any search.

On December 4 at the Jackson-Evers International Airport, a sari-clad Shankar was pulled out of a security line and patted down by a female Transportation Security Administration agent.

Shankar had presented her diplomatic papers to officers and was escorted by a Mississippi Development Authority representative and an airport security officer, but witnesses said she was subjected to the hands-on search.

Witnesses tell the 'Clarion-Ledger' that security agents told Shankar she was singled out because she was wearing a sari, which the paper notes is "a traditional Indian robe that is draped across the body".

The Ministry of External Affairs took it up strongly with the Americans after Krishna said: “There are certain well-established conventions, well established practices as to how diplomats representing other countries should be treated in a particular country. I am rather surprised in the manner Shankar has been treated. That too, for the second time in the last three months. This is unacceptable to India. We shall take it up with the US,” he said.

India on Saturday too conveyed a stern tit-for-tat message to the US that such incidents call for a “review” of privileges and facilities extended to the American diplomats in India.

This “strong concern” was communicated to the Deputy chief of mission in the US embassy Donald Lu, who was called on Saturday afternoon by Jawed Ashraf, Joint Secretary (in-charge of America division) in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

MEA sources said that Ashraf told Lu that New Delhi respects the privileges of foreign diplomats in India and extends diplomatic courtesies to them. But such incidents “naturally lead to calls for review” of privileges and facilities given in India.

It is learnt that Ashraf told Lu that the Indian ambassador had to undergo enhanced security checks because New Delhi has been informed she was wearing a sari.

In the past, many prominent Indians, including ministers, have faced some uncomfortable moments at US airports.

In September, visiting Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel was quizzed by US immigration authorities at the O'Hare airport in Chicago after his name and date of birth matched with that of another Praful Patel, who is on America's watch-list.

In August 2009, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan was detained and questioned at the Newark Liberty International Airport. Khan was headed to Chicago for a parade to celebrate India's Independence Day, when he was pulled aside by airport authorities for interrogation.

Former Defence Minister George Fernandes had claimed that he was strip-searched twice at Dulles Airport in the US Capital area, when he was on an official visit to Washington in early 2002 and another time while en route to Brazil in mid 2003.

The TSA needs to be sensitive to the Indian attires. Not sure if he triggered any metal sensors on his way...otherwise I am not sure what would generate the suspicion especially since there are always a lot of sikhs traveling within the US.

Now let there Diplomats come here wearing Pants, We Might have to search Inside the Zip.... "Open Up Mr, lets see what you got hiding in there" with a Gun pointed on there head...

The Yanks need to be a bit more educated and sensitive towards other cultures.

I don't believe there is any shame in getting frisked and all, our politicians and babus are a pampered lot and they make a huge hue and cry about nothing, yeah but the same shouldn't be an issue when the same is done to US guys in India then

Getting frisked is one thing, being asked to remove your turban is another. Perhaps you too need an education about the sensitivities of different communities in India.

Why our media sensationalize everything???? And I'm sick of this typical of South Asian VIP culture. :hitwall:

As per the US law diplomats of every country searched even chinese or saudis but they don't make any fuss about it.

If its a law and applies to all equally why make such a big hue and cry that make it international matter of embarrass the US Govt. or Indian Govt.???

Also, why exempt diplomats from physical checking in India? stop it at once and start with the envoy of pakistan. It will be very helpful in stopping many stuff smuggled.

another humiliation for india and they are coming fast and often.

Coming close at the heels of Indian Ambassador Meera Shankar being patted down in the US, another Indian diplomat to the UN -- Hardeep Puri was two weeks ago subjected to a turban pat down at the Houston airport. Sources said that even after the ambassador identified himself as a diplomat, he was held for half an hour in a separate enclosure before being humiliated by the authorities in the airport.

After Ambassador Puri was asked to remove his turban, he refused the US officials to carry out their search and directed them to refer to the rule book for diplomats. Sources said that the officials then went ahead and referred the book and reverted back with an apology after a span of 15 minutes.

However, despite the apology from the airport authorities, Hardeep Puri went ahead and lodged a complaint and said that the officials were not following standard practices. He added that in the name of security, they have insulted religious sentiments.

This humiliating incident came just days after Meera Shankar was subjected to a pat down search despite being accompanied by a US security officials as per diplomatic norms.

Following this, External Affairs Minister SM Krishna called the incident unacceptable and summoned deputy chief of mission Donald Lu.

Cant the bomb be found out via scanners? And even then one can always pat a turban down rather than asking a person to remove it.

This is becoming embaressing for big ego india , i suggest india dipolmats should inform the us airport security before arriving to avoid further humiliation.

Hundreds of thousands of people are getting searched everyday...diplomatic immunity only extends to immunity from getting charged with any crime or to hold a diplomat not to searches or questions.

If scanners could detect liquid or plastic bombs then scanners should be used instead.

An incident far worse than asking someone to take off his hat...a white woman was asked to take off her Bra at a US airport and she had no choice but to do it.
