India's spy satellite all set to keep a tab on Pakistan, China .

Tomorrow, my dear Indians, is a big day for our country. We seek to deploy our very own spy satellite.

The launch will mark India's entry into a group of selective 15 countries, including US, China, Russia, Israel, Turkey. But none need it more than us. We live around a ring of fire, a dwindling Pakistan, war torn Srilanka, duplous Bangladesh, and our 1962 enemy China who has always been a hindrance in our global ambitions, be it border issues or Nuke deal.

We face an enormous threat from our nothern and western borders, with terrorism-friendly Pakistan and rapidly expanding Chinese military ambitions(the recent discovery of Chinese nuke sub docs in near India).

I dedicate this thread, to how tomorrow's launch will change the dynamics in the Indian subcontinent.

Let me begin by posting my own analysis of what would have been different if we had a spy-sat earlier and what difference it would make tommorow.

Pakistan:
1) India has repeatedly alleged that Pakistan has not dismantled terror training camps operating in Pakistan occupied Kashmir, to which Pakistan has repeatedly denied saying India has no evidence. Well, now we will have a near pictorial evidence, which will be undeniably nailiing.


2) IA has warned of about 400-800 terrorists waiting to infiltrate into India. BSF already has thermal imaging cameras that they use to check infiltrators. But this is nothing compared to an all-day all-night, all-weather imagery. Imagine the kind of intellegence we would be able to gather. Fencing the LOC brought down infiltration by 75%, an eye in the sky can reduce it to about 95%.

3) Perhaps the biggest implication is that about how Kargil could have been prevented. IA neednt have lost a thousand soldiers in the first stages of the conflict had they known where and how the terrorists are located. Several post Kargil Commissions have blamed the lack of intellegence, to have caused the initial losses.

The fact that Pakistan would never go in for a conventional conflict, elevates the further need to have an eye to keep a tab on unorthodox warfare, that Kargil is an example of.

4) In event of a future conflict with Pakistan which was about to happen as an aftermath of 26/11, an eye in the sky means, unparalled military intellegence. Several IA officers have explained the fact that IA can do the same the damage to the enemy with half of the strength it would need atm, in event of a conflict, if there was specific intellegence availible to it.

WHY IS PAKISTAN WORRIED?

Apart from some of the reasons I have mentioned above here a couple more:
The satellite, which can see through clouds and carry out day-and-night all-weather imaging, has been one of the long-standing demands of the Indian military,

India’s existing satellites get blinded at night and in the monsoon season. This launch will provide India with the capability to track incoming hostile ballistic missiles. There goes the nuke bubble. A ballistic tracking missile along with state of the art Nuclear defence is what any country will kill for.


Why is Iran Worried?

Expressing concern over the launch by India of an Israeli satellite capable of spying, the Iranian envoy in New Delhi said his Government had taken up the matter informally. Talking to reporters in New Delhi on Feb. 5, Syed Mehdi Nabizadeh said, his country hopes that India will not give its spy technology to Israel. “Our officials have expressed our point of view”, he said.

The 300-kg RISAT is among the most advanced eyes in the sky as it is capable of monitoring changes on earth irrespective of flight or weather conditions. The satellite equipped with a Synthetic Aperture Radar payload, has the capability to see through clouds and carry out day-night all-weather imaging.

Iran is concerned over the expanding Indo-Israel military ties. It fears that Israel could use Indian spy intelligence to plan operations within Iran and keep a tab on Iranian military ambitions.

You do realize that a 'spy sat' is on station for only a few minutes. It has to keep rotating around the earth. So one spy sat would give you coverage of an area for only a few minutes. It cant start monitoring the LoC or something like that. It can only take pictures at periodic intervals.

It is however useful for a LOT of other things, however, reducing infiltration is not one of them.

You do realize that a 'spy sat' is on station for only a few minutes. It has to keep rotating around the earth. So one spy sat would give you coverage of an area for only a few minutes. It cant start monitoring the LoC or something like that. It can only take pictures at periodic intervals.

It is however useful for a LOT of other things, however, reducing infiltration is not one of them.

It might be Geostationary, or its orbittal velocity might be quite high so it may pass over the area quickly?

Not all spy satellites are low-earth orbitting. Some are geo-stationary as well.

I agree Risat is a low-earth satellite, but however it takes about 55 minutes to rotate about the earth, so it doesnt create that much of a difference

No live coverage of Isro's spy sat launch

MUMBAI: Isro is downplaying the launch of 'spy satellite' Risat-2 on Monday despite the model election code of conduct not coming in its
way.

On Saturday, Isro officials told TOI the space agency has decided to do away with the traditional live telecast of the launch accompanied by a commentary by Doordarshan and other TV channels. The 48-hour countdown began at 6.45am on Saturday and the launch is slated for 6.45am on Monday at Sriharikota. Though TV crew members will be present at Sriharikota, they will, however, not be provided any facilities for covering the take off. "The TV is welcome to telecast the launch later in the day."

On Saturday Isro released an eight-line detail about 'Risat-2' in its website. It says the satellite weighing 300 kg will be placed at an altitude of 550 km. "Risat-2 is a radar imaging satellite with all weather capability to take images of the earth. This satellite will enhance Isro's capability for disaster management," it says. No mention has been made about its other capabilities like the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) acquired from Israel which according to space experts has armed the satellite with defence capabilities.

Similarly, the website has given a nine-line description of Anusat, the first satellite built by an Indian university which will piggy back on Risat-2. It says that Anusat will operate in the same orbit as Risat-2.

Pakistan Defence, a website on Pakistan's security issues, has said the "newly-acquired satellite will immensely enhance India's capability to keep a tab on its unfriendly neighbourhood. Risat-2 is considered to be the first of its kind for India," it added.

We are not obsessed with Pakistan, but we are obsessed with the secirity and safety of each and every indian

Now i do believe that after the launch of this satellite, it has become even more important that we acquire an Anti Sat capability if not then in an event of a conflict Indians will have an upper hand in terms of real time intelligence gathering and modern day war fares depends upon how accurate your Intel is.

Rightly depicted.

But who sets the fire in the ring? It’s none other than India itself.

Instead of creating problems and then try to solve them, wouldn’t it be smarter to stop creating the problem in the first place?

These are simple steps to stop creating the problems:

1)Stop treating China as your potential enemy number one or actual enemy number one. Stop anti-China propaganda in various levels. It is truly pathetic that many of you apparently haven't realized how important to make your north neighbor as a friend, not a foe. Don't be fooled by your politicians.

2) Resolutely abandon your imperialistic mentality (perhaps inherited from imperial Great British) while dealing with your neighbors, even though most of your neighbors are weaker and smaller than you.

3) Solve Kashmir problem via various channels ASAP.

4) Render your vast mass with literacy, food and health care. So they'll learn that to be respected, they have to respect.

It shouldn't be Geostationary, if it is using the tech of Synthetic Aperture, it has to move with respect to the target. Thus it can synthesize the aperture to get higher resolution.
