Probably Burmese influence. North-East has no border with China.
They are Burmese related ethnics. Nothing to do with China. In fact the pockets in China that do eat exotic animals are primarily due to influence from Southeast Asia, although the rest of the world likes to stereotype Chinese this way, most Han Chinese actually do not eat very exotic meats.

Very protein rich and low carb diet, way better than the useless carb rich and protein deficient veggie “mainland” indian diet-- bhindi, dal, sambar, aloo mutter, samosa. Most atheletes are from these states, indians from other states play ludo and cricket.

K, I wouldn't know but I do remember that in Singapore, HK, Thailand most supermarkets have a live creepy crawly section. Eels and other creepy shite, man.. not lobster and prawn (which are proper delish). It's an east Asian thing, in Vietnam they eat snake, drink its blood and so on.. cicadas eeww

Anyway, I don't see what is so specially scary about this. American, British, European factory farms have much more horrendous conditions, and the beings there suffer only greatly. And the scale is much, much greater, beyond ordinary comprehension. Hundreds of billions every year. It's just that sue anyone who tries to show the reality of it.
Recently there was the Cricle Four farms case, where someone entered a factory farm to rescue pigs from there. Children were drinking blood of their parents, lying in a pool of blood. The farms sued the rescuers. It was so horrific that they wanted to disallow the jury from viewing the video. And that's just one small farm in a small part of America.
This is just the reality of flesh-eating. The tribals just do it in the open to one species, the "civilized" flesh-eaters do it behind closed doors to other species and act horrified when it's done to species they keep as pets.
