It's official. As revealed a couple of weeks ago here, India's National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL) will develop the Indian Regional Transport Aircraft (IRTA), designated RTA-70 regional jet, not just as a twin turboprop as earlier believed but a common platform with two variants -- a twin turboprop and a twin turbofan. In addition, both variants will also have stretched versions designated RTA-90. The slides above are a from presentation made by NAL Director Dr AR Upadhya. With the Saras programme in one right mess, it seems a little odd that NAL is proceeding quite rapidly on the RTA programme. Even the national auditor had suggested that NAL drop plans of initiating the project without first getting its house in order as far as the Saras was concerned. It said, "Keeping in view the problems faced by NAL in HANSA and SARAS, projects relating to marketing of the aircrafts, difficulties in finding an industrial partner and lack of specialised manpower, NAL may review initiation of the new project for development of a 70 seater aircraft." And this was before the Saras crash of March 2009.

The reason why I'm happy is because I DON"T want India to let go of TURBOPROPS which might get affected because we want to prove a point with jets. Sure jets look cooler but the turbos are really efficient and will be a very important part of future aviation.

dude its an artistic impression its not even the actual picture of prototype so relax and lets wait for the proper picture of prototype

I believe so too, but I've also heard of some really weird wing designs being discussed by the guys who're working on it. Apparently some of these designs give exceptional efficiency (though I don't think they're using it for these birds)

yea you are right but they ain't gonna be soo straight as shown in the image

You are right .. Ill wait before logical looking things are posted. I am sorry .. but that is a very poor way to present such a huge achievement .. Thats something I would not have posted to begin with, especially with the word "Common" everywhere.

And may the national auditor hang himself. If we keep proceeding at the snail's pace that our babus set, we just won't finish any project before 20 yrs. I'd rather have an aggressive PSU that takes some risk than one that keeps looking over it's shoulders before taking every step.

The baboos running the NAL are daydreamers who come up with fantastic projects when they can't even complete and deliver the ones in hand. These clowns should take due diligence about their true capabilities before embarking on other projects.

What have they done about SARAS? Their indifference,, irresponsiblity and incompetence led to the death of two test pilots. Have they come clean about that avoidable mishap? Was anyone at NAL made an example of for that unwarranted tragedy?

Now they are coming up with newer aircrafts when the country is still struggling with other projects involving aircrafts.

Why can't these over zealous baboos come up with a decent, workable trainer aircraft for the IAF?

If India manages to produce a safe turboprop commercial airliner, I'd at least have no problem in Pakistan buying a bunch of these. To heck with expensive ATRs.

Just make it safe. I'm not sure about NAL's ability in mass producing this within the next decade either.

^^This time also we will bring some experienced player as guide..
India may not be doing everything on its own but scenario is changing. Companies are willing to take risks even if at the last moment they have to consult a big player. Hope they learn something of these projects and can go all alone on coming ones.

A good News Indeed, But Can We Compete with the existing Companies.... India has Vast potential, If companies like TATA ,Mahindra,Samtel are allowed to co operate The It would be a Huge success
