India's provocative military doctrine

A lone wave of sanity in the sea of insanity.

This is with reference to "India's proactive military doctrine" by Dr Maleeha Lodhi (January 5). The key points identified by the writer do not suggest that the nature of the threat to our security has drastically changed. From the strategic point of view, military doctrines are subject to review from time to time. As for the two-front war, India has political and territorial disputes with both Pakistan and China. Hence it is its strategic need to consider a two-front war scenario. Such a threat is a nightmare even for a superpower. Seen in this context, this kind of threat to India is favourable for Pakistan. In 1962, China wanted Pakistan to generate a threat on the eastern border so as to dilute the Indian capability to fight China. Likewise, China took certain actions in the 1965 Pakistan-India war to help Pakistan.

It is a reality that India faces both military and non-military threats. Our strategy to provide the Kashmir struggle with diplomatic support is to dilute the Indian military capability against Pakistan. No future war can be fought without 'operational synergy', and a military strategy not assimilating this reality will always fail. We should not forget the lessons of the 1965 war and Kargil. It is the ABC of military strategy that a threat is a direct outcome of capability. Instead of rhetoric our military minds need to gauge the change in the Indian capability which can affect our response. India's primary motive is to deter Pakistan from supporting the insurgency in Kashmir. It has displayed its military and diplomatic coercive powers in the past. Pakistan changed its position as the international environment had changed. We must focus on our external security to a point that war can be sustained till diplomacy takes over, because a military competition only will be suicidal for Pakistan. Pakistan can no more sustain the so-called threats to its security as their economic cost is too high. Likewise, prudent leaders do not indulge in a war of words, and in this context statements by some of our leaders have been totally superfluous.

India's military doctrine

A lot of talk has sprouted over the past days over Gen. Kapoor's statement about the strategy review of the Indian Military preparedness and media reports about the Indian Army's war room discussions for evolving a Cold Start doctrine. A lot of POVs have been put forward, some rubbishing the strategy as a non-starter or viewing it as an utterly dangerous adventurism. However, from an Indian perspective, a reassessment of our security planning is a need of the hour considering the fast evolving nature of threats to security of the country.

In this changed scenario where governments of of our neighbours can hide unscrupulously behind non-state actors, where non-army regulars (terrorists) are sent in to Kargill as a vile plan to subvert the economic and territorial integrity of India, where an adventurist ISI (oops sorry, non-state actors) are planning sabotage acts from even friendly soils (Mr. Dawood Gilani a.k.a headle(ss)y), in such a scenario, it is only expected of the government of India to direct the country's armed forces to take up a thorough review of the nation's threat neuteralizing abilities. India's military postures in the past, though firm, but have always been based on a defensive approach, probably that is why smart alec minds cooked up notions such as the "hazaar cuts" fantasy and "Ek = Dus" equations. This gall of harming India has risen primarily owing to our "reactive" approaches.

However, when we put this in perspective with the situation in East Pakistan, which by the way was the only instance where the Indian approach was "proactive", not only were we able to avert the escalations of the state organized criminal acts of rape, target killings and mass murders in Bangladesh but also led to the capitulation of over 90,000 of the mighty forces which ideally going by the Ek = Dus formula should have been enough for the whole Indian Defence Forces at that time and not just the ones deployed on the Eastern Front, we find that geo-political problems needs solutions of relative permanency which will arise only with India being more assertive and firm in our resolve to take non-sense only as minimal as needed to ensure the realization of India's security objectives.

Like as if we require any Muslim help for confronting India. We're the sole nuke power in the entire Muslim world and that will remain so for a very long time to come. Something you will have to live and deal with for the rest of your miserable life. It's a fact that we have neutralized your warmongering by acquiring this deterrence capability. Something that you cannot comprehend and are for obvious reasons unwilling to accept. Your nonsensical denial won't change this reality one bit. No one dares to cast an evil eye towards Pakistan due to its nuclear capability. Indian cowards resort to covert operations against innocent Pakistanis from terror consulates in Afghanistan, but the Pakistani army is also dealing superbly with neutralizing this aggression. You're just aggravated and annoyed that you have not been able to achieve your evil designs against Pakistan. You're a angry and bitter person. Let me take your illusion away and confirm that your hatred will consume you.

PS. One advice, learn some grammar and how to spell properly.

1.i agree with your point on nuclear deterrence but the chances of keeping those nuclear bombs with you is decreasing day by day, if you are aware of the recent happenings in pakistan.

2. lets assume, according to you india sponsors terrorism inside pakistan from afganistan. can you tell me what measure your army took to counter it? come out of the drug supplied to you by your army to praise it. you know, your army has been screwed day in and day out by US on the oneside and TTP on the other.

3.i fully agree with your last point on " one's hatred will consume themself". if you go by the sentence you would realise that pakistan's hatred against india consumes it everyday in the form of blasts and still lot more to come(i thank our RAW agents for doing great job there).

Terrified? Give me a break. Pakistanis are indeed terrified by Indian sponsored terror from across the border if that's what you mean to say.

Why shouldn't we bring a nuclear scenario on the forefront especially when this is our strength? It only makes sense to deter an aggressor like India with nuclear deterrence and it has worked perfectly for the past few decades. The Pakistanis aren't sitting idle and are working very hard to solidify and improve the lethality and effectiveness of this deterrence to a whole different level. Remember that a nuclear war practically also means no more India. Something that you so often and conveniently forget to mention.

So, you're a prophet and are able to predict the future? It's true that a nuclear war will be the last resort for Pakistan. You should pray that moment never arrives in your life time or beyond.

Fortunately, Pakistan isn't alone in confronting the Indian aggression and has the support of a major regional ally, namely China. China is another thorn in your evil plans that you so often forget to mention. Any offensive against Pakistan will be met with immense resistance from both sides. India is only full of hot air where generals like to make vague threats from their comfy headquarters. How can you neutralize our nuclear capability when the Americans haven't even been able to do so. Not even in your wildest imagination can you neutralize this capability. Just breathe for a moment and realize that nuclear Pakistan is a reality. One that is here to stay till the end of times.

1. dont pretend as you are not terrified, if that would have been such a ignorable issue then why your media and you people in the forum disscus it lenght and breadth.

2.dont get too much crazy about your nukes, if there is perfect missile shield is in place then it will be useless to possess nuke. the point here is your nukes are not going to be with you in the near future.

3.where is the question of china come to your help? if it helps, it is an wonderfull opportunity for uncle sam and russia to do their part.this is the reason why i mentioned you guys are living in illusion. 20 years back US was your great friend and today you are cursing US. history repeats itself, and you will lament about china in the future for the same reason. you forget one basic thing, other countries using you just to maintain their strategic depth. once if the issues are solved regarding india vs china, you will have no one to care.so, get prepared to face the nightmare. even china will not hesitate to bomb you if maintain the current rate in terrorising entire globe.

Pardon your language. Even no muslim support, still India won't call for any misadventure.India never silent. Pakistan been fighting proxy war since 1971. Not new for Pakistan.

so you wont pardon your language in bringing bramins or muslims into the post.
one interesting fact you should know is that misadventure is 100% possible and that is what kapoor wanted to convey and he did it. hope you guys are not insane to use your nuke for small adventures..dont forget, because of your long association with those proxies, they repaying you back the principal with more than agreed interest, you are lucky enough to get such loyal proxies.

^^ IMO.....whole world should have reacted to this regular war mongering, specially the regional states.
Pakistan is only troubled with terrorism which eminate in 2006....if you are crediting deepak kappor or dehli with it than it is not a good sign already.

Thankfully the whole world does not think like Pakistan, so they have not reacted. Unlike Pakistan the world does not view India as a regional security nightmare & an unstable country.

What are you reffering as hollabaloo?

@ UchihaCG: if indians are arogant than it is not the problem of our generals but if you attack Pakistan than it is definately problem for the whole nation.I expect more than press conferences as a reaction.

Armies of stable democracies dont go to war withought the peoples consent or full approval. Unlike the PA the IA is not in the habit of toppling civilian governments at will, this itself goes to show the control of the civilian government over the military in India.
