Indian Aircraft Carrier (Project-71)
Thursday, 06 November 2008 22:12 Aircraft Carrier

Project Update:
Construction commenced with plate cutting on 11 April 2005. The keel was laid down on 28 Feb 2009. In an information session in Parliament, on 16 May 2007, Defence Minister A K Antony stated that induction of a third aircraft carrier is envisioned by 2017. He added that a decision to construct another vessel can be made only after the construction of the first ship has progressed beyond a certain state.

In an interview to the Times of India, dated 01 December 2007, the Chief of Naval Staff - Admiral Sureesh Mehta - stated that the second IAC is already on the drawing board and at least three such vessels are planned.

Don;t compare India's situation with other nuclear powers. India is in a neighborhood that shares borders with China and Pakistan. Both countries have openly declared that are willing to use nukes for first strike option thereby taking out any capacity that India may have before it fires a single shot. India needs to pay attention more to these scenarios and act accordingly. I agree more nukes is not the answer but till india finds a better solution it better invest in numbers. If the threat ceases to exist, india can always take these weapons grade nuclear material and convert it to civilian use!

More number of nukes doesn't mean more security. There is an optimum level of arsenal you need and accumulating beyond that is useless because that amounts zero additional benefit.

Thanks for the suggestion but increasing the production of weapon grade uranium might mean end to Indo-US nuclear deal. Both US and India won't do this because both have their own interest in this but many nations will go against India then you might be forced to scrap the deal to maintain your credibility. I don't think US would even let India do this in the first place.

Apart from this, we building our own 2 layer BMD which is very good and might purchase patriot from you guys. We have almost completed our nuclear triad, so our second strike capability will increase, there are some new missiles being tested in the recent years and we would test ICBM and IRBM this year. By the way i would really like to see, when US will start helping us in Sub-business. I read one report last year stating that US might have something in their bag for India when Defense Minister went to US.
