Coast Guard to launch GSL-built patrol vessel
Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL) will achieve yet another milestone in its quest for self-reliance in sophisticated shipbuilding with the launch of the largest new generation offshore patrol vessel (OPV) on November 26 at Goa. Designed in-house and built by GSL for the Indian Coast Guard, the vessel will be launched by Rachna Thapliyal, president Tatrakshika, in company of Vice Admiral Anurag G Thapliyal, DGICG, GSL's chairman and managing director Rear Admiral Shekhar Mital, and other senior dignitaries from government, Navy and Coast Guard. This 105m state-of-the-art OPV is first of the series of six OPVs being built by GSL for ICG. The OPV will help meet ICG's increasing requirement for undertaking policing and patrolling of the Indian exclusive economic zone. The vessel is also capable of other functions like search and escue operations, pollution control and external fire-fighting. This Vessel will also be deployed for ocean surveillance and for monitoring sea lanes of communication. The ship is capable of supporting embarkation and operation of the indigenously designed advanced light helicopter.
