India’s internet user base to hit 402 million, second-highest in the world: IAMAI - Times of India

DELHI: The number of internet users in India is expected to reach 402 million by December 2015, registering a growth of 49% over last year, says a report by industry body IAMAI.

About 306 million of these will access internet from their mobile devices, up from 276 million in October this year, according to the report by Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) and IMRB.

"While internet in India took more than a decade to move from 10 million to 100 million and 3 years from 100 to 200 million, it took only a year to move from 300 to 400 million users. Clearly, internet is mainstream in India today," the report said.

This number is expected to further surge to 462 million by June next year as more people come online, especially through their mobile devices.

The total internet user base stood at over 300 million in December last year, which grew to 375 million by October this year.
"Currently, India has the third largest internet user base in the world but it is estimated that by December, India will overtake the US (as the second-largest base). China currently leads with more than 600 million internet users," it said.

The report said mobile internet user base in urban India has grown 65% over last year to reach 197 million, while the rural user base surged 99% to 80 million by October this year.

This is expected to grow to 219 million (urban) and 87 million (rural), respectively.

It also found that of all the internet non-users surveyed in the 35 cities as part of this study, 11.4 million said they are willing to access the internet in the next one year with over two-thirds intending to do so through mobile phones.

I know 3/4 Indian access internet through their smartphones, but the other report done by Ericsson said 52% Indians internet users are "un-networked", meaning they don't use any social media, or barely use internet, much higher than global average of 18%.

I think the title is fairly clear, it's about how many people are connected to the internet, how heavily people use it or dont is not in question here.

The title is about Internet USERS, not about available internet ACCESS.

Do you realize that there is a difference between "dont spend much time" and "spend no time". not that hard to understand.

I was watching a BBC report, a young guy was interviewed. He said he has never used internet because he doesn't know English, though he has a smartphone. Even a smartphone shop keeper did not know how to use internet. My original question was if people like him are considered internet users or not.

I still remember having an bsnl broadband connection when i was in class 12th. They used to give unlimited internet with 512kbps speed for rs 750 back then. I did make full use of it by going fully HD for everything if you know what I mean.:azn:
