India's GPS Freebie for Neighbours Soon as GPS-Aided Geo-Augmented Navigation System (GAGAN) Ready

That's utter BS.....in this day and age of globalization, self sufficiency doesn't mean everything has to be done in house even if comparing solutions are available........and sometimes i may not be practical.
You define you requirements and you go about achieving them.

About the Indian GPS, it is fine if India wants to do it, but i don't see it becoming anything important in India or beyond anytime soon when there are time tested systems easily available.

It's same as India launching a satellite to Mars, it is good for the ego boost....but then what did exactly India learn that is already not known to the world?

We want new solutions, not reinventing the old ones.

Please tell that to the team that Procures India's first line Airforce equipment.
For a simple cargo transporter, India has to go to Russia/USA.

Nice joke.

With Due respect. Pakistan neither invents nor reinvents yet finds time to disdain others achievements. India may not have the capability like the west to support her needs but we certainly do have the capacity to cater our requirements should our armed forces be ready to use whats built inside.

Your current Navigation systems may not come in handy when you have to take your decisions alone, only those which is in your control can support you in your bad times god forbid.

Not belittling anything, just saying, does everything need to be reinvented? For developing nations there are priorities much bigger than that.

On a side note.....India's accomplishments:
Pythagoras’s theorem actually an Indian discovery: Harsh Vardhan - The Times of India

Of course Yes. By reinventing, lets take the example of Mars Orbiter Mission. ISRO is certainly going to generate revenue as the world now knows that India has attained the capability to launch satellites that far. Our Young Generation feels motivated to take up jobs within country rather enlighten the already enlightened west.

A healthy potion of our GDP goes to improving Education, Health and Public Lifestyle. Its only a penny that's spent on research and experiments.

Reinventing bridges the gap and who knows one day India might end up Inventing.

Mars mission has given India valuable experience on simulation using supercomputers and also deep space communications.

Btw, you are wasting responding to the think tank's posts, just report them :)

What's the point of this? GPS is already openly available.....and in times of war, i doubt if any of the 'Indian Neighbors' are going to trust the Indian system anyway.

Pakistan can already use GPS and BEIDOU........so frankly no one gives a crap.

You don't trust doesn't mean others will not. There is no alternative. Either you change mind or use more fuel.

Others will use it for sure. And we should charge them.

gagan system full form == "geo-augmented navigation system"...

1. why are the second "g" and "a" in the short form taken from the middle of "navigation in the full form.

2. where did the "s" in the full form vanish.

3. the actual short form should have been "gans".

4. gagan in sanskrit means "the sky".

looks like yet another case of forcing another "indian" ( sanskrit ) name on a isro or drdo system.

. . . .
No idea, but Akbar's name is used for a chopper.

oh, yes... the mi-35, and quite appropriate the name... but of course, indian military top leadership is against evil muslim invaders therefore mi-35 is being retired in favor of glorious american apache helicopters.

I don't know what you will call it - benevolent invaders who conquered lands using love and roses?

But in any case, it is irrelevant. Sanskrit is the mother language of this country, it is appropriate to use it.

But we are now going off topic.

The important part is that this SBAS will lead to better economic utilization of airspace and lead to enhanced safety of not just Indians but also Bhutanese, Bangladeshis, Nepalis & Sri Lankans.
GoI should make it affordable for all.

When the established US GPS is available worldwide, what advantage would gagan give to indias neighbours? Is the gagan system more advances or cheaper?

No military grade signals ( At least from GPS).

Unreliable during war/depends on host country's compassion.

Allows host country to track your sensitive military equipment.

BTW @Chanakya's_Chant , reporter has made serious errors in this report and has mixed GAGAN and IRNSS.

GAGAN is GPS aided geo-augmented Navigation system. It is network of ground stations which provide reference signals for navigation so that the error that creeps into GPS due to atmospheric perturbations is weeded out. This has for civilian use and is more of a economic venture than military.

OTOH, IRNSS is Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System. It is what this author is describing in this report. IRNSS is India's GPS and has both civilian and military use.The map used is also for IRNSS.

i must sleep so i won't reply about history, especially the second line.

there should have been only one global navigation system in the world, and operated by uno.
