Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar may look for buying Gripen fighter aircraft during his trip to Sweden later this month in what could be the first major defence deal with the country since after a 1987 Bofors gun purchase bombed with the kickback charges that brought down Rajiv Gandhi government.

Gripen deal looks attracting since its makers, Swedish firm Saab, have proposed to set up capabilities in India to make the aircraft in India and further extend technological cooperation in developing a Mark II version of the Tejas light combat aircraft.

Only in June, Indian Air Force chief Marshal Arup Raha was in Sweden on a 5-day tour when he flew in a version of the single-engine Gripen fighter during his visit. The Gripen prospects also brighten since Parrikar had said in the past that the government would take a decision on a new line of fighter aircraft by the end of the current fiscal.

Sweden and Saab are pitching the Gripen E for the Indian Air Force requirement of fighter aircraft since after no aircraft passed the trials conducted for buying 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft. They included Saab’s Gripen C/D and versions of the F-16 Fighting Falcon of the US Lockheed Martin and the F/A-E/F Super Hornet of US Boeing. Unlike the Gripen C/D variant that was fielded in the trials in India, the Gripen E has a wider undercarriage that fold into its double-delta wings (and not its fuselage).

The defence ministry sources said with a wider and deeper understanding with the US in recent weeks – as exemplified by the Lemoa – the possibility of acquiring weapons platforms with US-origin equipment has brightened. The Gripen E is powered by US-origin GE-414 engines.

DM MP may go, meet SAAB folks, even take a ride. But he cant take a decision unless the formal proposal is approved as per the process and it comes to him for recommendation to CCS.

Thats a long long process.

So "he may look at buying" is a wrong assertion. He may discuss like he discussed with Ash Carter for F16 and F18 proposals.

BTW thats a wrong assertion. Gripen E/F is pitched as LCA MK2 not developing another Mark2 of Tejas LCA.

The title of the article and the content thereafter have no relation.

In regards to the actual meat of the article it is simply a rehash of what has been propagated in the past ie blatant BS.

Right now indians are buying jets from everyone except china, but on the ground all they have been doing for the lasst 10 years is repair Su 30

We are buying the Gripen E/F. Old news.

They have made offers we cannot refuse.

ab grippen ki bari hai ?:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:
indians gona troll every body.. i guess minister will be able to fill his pockets on gripen too.

but honestly gripen would have been a good choice had indian dumped, LCA in early 2000s and simply went into do a JV to developed gripen NG and inducted some 250+ planes and today would have been exporting it too

a 250 gripen, 300 odd su 30 and 5th gen would have been killer fleet

We are cutting off all relevant western sources of supply for PAF. Sweden and France have managed to develop the most advanced aircraft available today.
WTF..the only perspective source for us is italy, may be south africa for sub systems and USA for major systems, not sweden or france, they are not going to sell us by the way and we cant afford it anyway
you are just trolling them

Yes, the only source available for fighter jets for PAF is the Typhoon now and that's very expensive with a shoddy development program.

If it wasn't for India, Sweden and France have no problems selling jets to Pak.

This govt has indirectly revived MMRCA deal once again but in different format making fool of themselves, Canceled MMRCA first then signed deal for same Rafale though in reduced numbers with MII angle thrown in too then why cancelled the the last deal ? could have bought 36 in lieu of 18 as mentioned in last deal. and those 36 deal is not yet signed till now

Most funny part now is going back to same vendors or opening talks with them for the same fighter in which they have lost way back in 2012. i firmly believe this has been political decision to cancel original MMRCA deal thus delaying the induction of fighter aircraft further, Extremely immature governance by govt on this deal. if India will keep on wasting time then same vendors will come out with modified versions to delay the deal further making india look joker

@PARIKRAMA @Abingdonboy

Rafale deal saga, rejection of F16 production then this news. I would like to believe it is to find the right mix of quality, expenditure and most importantly TOT. Hopefully govt will take a wise decision.
