Indian media and the government have been active in highlighting the issue for a very long time. There were many movies made on the issue. Eg. "kraut gamma" which won the national award and " marhrubhoomi" which won some international awards.
There are severe laws to prevent it and schemes to save girl children who may be abandoned.
