NEW DELHI: India's dream project of building mid-size civilian aircraft is expected to get a nod tomorrow at a high-level meeting convened by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to discuss measures to boost the manufacturing sector.

The meeting of the high level committee on manufacturing will also discuss ways to boost steel production and textile exports besides the launch of pilot project on electric and hybrid vehicles for Delhi.

One of the most crucial decisions expected at the meeting is the go-ahead for the preparatory work on building a mid- size civilian aircraft having medium range, sources told .

The proposal to build an indigenous 90-seater aircraft has been in the pipeline for a number of years.

According to the proposal, the design and development of the aircraft is expected to cost Rs 4,355 crore and series production would entail further expenditure of Rs 3,200 crore.

The aircraft is to be built through a collaborative venture of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL), the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and DRDO. It will be take some years to be ready for flight.(YA!! we know:devil:)

Earlier, Bangalore-based NAL had earlier developed India's first multi purpose 14-seater civilian aircraft Saras. But on March 6, 2009, two IAF test pilots along with a flight test engineer were killed when the second prototype crashed 30 km from Bangalore.

The meeting is also expected to finalise an action plan to develop production capacity in advanced alloys and composites.

A pilot project on electric and hybrid vehicles for Delhi is also expected to be worked out.

The meeting will also deliberate on a plan to boost textile industry and exports, given the price advantages India has in this sector.

I dont see need for any civilian plane in mid range. Nobody use them. Why not try build something in 230/240 capacity range. Those are used by all airliners.
Capacity building- you must first crawl before you can run.....



I would ideally like to see Indian pvt player participation in such projects though.
 
First flight when going to happen? 2025-2030? :)
 
Well i am so disappointed from the efforts of this government about the textile export. Importers in Uk are importing from Bangladesh and china even they are Indian origin. when u ask them why don't you import from India..they said they can get cheaper and better service from other countries then India. Shocking!!

We doesnt have much experience in this field, so better make a 90 seater before going for 240.

They can be use to connect Metros with small regional airports..modified versions can be use for cargo or military applications like AEWACS.

First flight when going to happen? 2025-2030? :)

Herd that the prototype 1 has been upgraded and will now be prototype 2 and a new prototype 3 with new engines and many other upgrades which will be almost the production model will fly by this year end or next year beginning.Again only talks have been taking place.Donno about the actual progress

According to some feasibilty study the Indian aircraft will be some 25% cheaper in product cost and some 20% cheaper in running cost.So it will have a good domestic demand atleast..Hopefully..

Ya heard NaMo lashing out @ UPA for this.It seems Gujarat is most affected by this policy.

actually,India is building many mini airports where you don't need a 240 seaters..I doubt those will even need a 90 seaters for now.for now,mainly small aircrafts and helos will be needed.but then,it'll be needed when this Aircraft will come out.for bigger aircrafts,we can always go for international companies,right???
 
why they don't concentrate and prioritise in exporting those products like textile etc. which they are more expert and can produce cheaper then rest of countries instead jumping into another project which is 15 years away from any progress...
 
Can we expect the aircraft to be ready to take to the skies by 2145 at least? I got my doubts! :no:

Point me the target group. Airliners prefer bulk carriage. So they look for bigger planes.

And about cost..... Lets not comment on that before its in development phase but to have an idea have look at the existing projects and cost estimates over the years.
