Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pet project of building the 508-kilometre long Mumbai-Ahmedabad high speed line to reduce travel time between the two cities to a flat two hours will take at least ten years to build and operationalise, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica) has indicated.
The Japanese agency, which is surveying plans to enable trains to run at 350 kilometres per hour on the route, has estimated the project cost at Rs 70,000 crore, minus the costs of escalation and interest repayment during the construction period.

The Jica has recommended that in line with international practices, India’s first high-speed corridor be built on the standard gauge.

If work on executing the Mumbai-Ahmedabad line is taken up within this year, construction work can begin in 2017 after the closure of the design and bidding process and rolling stock procurement can be completed from 2018 to 2023, according to the Jica’s project implementation plan.

“The project has witnessed lack of activity in the first year of NDA rule but will gather momentum after the Jica’s final survey report is submitted in July,” a senior ministry official said.

The Japanese funding agency, which has offered a soft but tied loan for executing the project, has confirmed the financial viability of the project by indicating a positive economic rate of return of 11%.

Including the Mumbai and Sabarmati stations, the corridor will have 12 stations, with maximum stoppages of two minutes proposed at Surat, Vadodara and Ahmedabad.

Other stations, including Thane, Virar, Vapi, Bilimora and Surat, will have a stoppages of one minute each.

Well I doubt on today's scenario we need a bullet train......... I dont think it will be viable..... Indian railway is known for cheapest transport system in planet.........

It's gonna be a seperate authority like Delhi metro is separate.

You cant compare Metro and this train...... You need to keep it significantly lower than air fare to attract passengers, and wonder how is it gonna be viable.....

Secondly, this mode of travel would be as expensive as traveling by air. It would be for the rich and famous. Not for the ordinary mortal. I think it's a waste of resources, time and money. It should be put on hold till such time our per capita income goes up at least three times. Otherwise its a lemon!

As I said ... its gonna be ready in 2025 after a decade of high growth...so many rich people esp. on the Mumbai Ahmadabad route.
It's gonna be separate from railways so better management.
And people will pay more as long as they feel that time is saved between Checkin/Checkout , security check etc. The one at bombay will stop at BKC, thats a commercial district. Imagine getting down at abombay and within half an hour beginning work.

Economy doubles in 6 yrs at 7-8% p.a. in Nominal terms ... we begin today (or a few years later ), we get it in 2025+

Yes you are correct at present we don't need any bullet or missile trains.

I would be more happy if they double the average train speed, electrify 70% of line, all single vline converted in double line, & all couched would be fitted with discharge free toilet in 5 years.
All that is happening anyway.

JICA decides their interest rate on health of railway & Railway have paid in installment which need money as Bullet Train Project suck money not generate.

Its better to improve efficiency of Indian Railways by making it safe and clean...
Rail collisions and derailing is happening now.

All the tech is here , IIT KGP did develop anti collision device that UPA did not install. Prabhu has comitted to its installation.
He has already committed 8lk cr for the next 5 yrs. The bullet train is something completely separate.
As I said , if you want more of what you already have(shoddy infra) , keep doing what you have been doing.

Nope. Since Bullet train is a new separate authority , they start from a blank slate as they will be autonomous and not under direct political control.

I am not talking about politics.
In 1910 with steam engine they make record of 175 km/hr & in 2015 with diesel engine our bhopal shatabdi fastest speed is 160 km/hr for barely 30 minute.
One we didn't have fund to upgrade current railway infrastructure which indicated by budget other hand we are scouting for bullet train which could only take market from 0.1% of population which can taken care by Airways.
