Yes I agree this was over the top and unfair.

As would have been the reaction of a mob that would have gone on rampage at this sensitive time.

How fair would it have been for the family of those who would have been killed? For kids losing their dads? Parents their sons?

Then tell us- why should anyone at any point speak up against any injustice if you want cower over the ill actions coming from it? Your founding fathers did not stop speaking against the ill's of the british raj's rule just because it meant thousands would be killed or were killed previously.

If this news is true than its a big shame that they been arrested.... However her comment was not good.... Bal thackeray always worked for Maharashtra state.... When terrorist attacked amarnath yatra than bal thackeray warned by saying how about we reply by attacking haj yatra? Since than no attack happened on amarnath yatra.... He warned to keep peace and it worked.... He warned many times to pakistan but never attacked them inside pak.... To bihari people they used slap and sticks but never bullets.... Javed miadad once met him and said to world bal thackeray good human and we should meet him to know him.... Bal thackeray worked for multi million maharashtra people and he was truely a lion.... doc - Look at the TOI comments for the news of this girl's arrest. Do you see a riot based on those comments? Cmon doc - this is not fair. My other question is why the cops did not apply the same law for Katju? Or Katju can comment because of his position while the girl can't?

Each and every political leader have their own set of emotional followers - So does that mean one can't comment about Mamta or Rahul or Mulayam or Mayawathi as well? I am curious on what your position is.

21-year-old girl held for Facebook post questioning Mumbai's 'Bal Thackeray shutdown' - The Times of India

MUMBAI: Police on Sunday arrested a 21-year-old girl for questioning the total shutdown in the city for Bal Thackeray's funeral on her Facebook account.

Another girl who 'liked' the comment was also arrested.

The duo were booked under Section 295 (a) of the IPC (for hurting religious sentiments ) and Section 64 (a) of the Information Technology Act, 2000. Though the girl withdrew her comment and apologized, a mob of some 2,000 Shiv Sena workers attacked and ransacked her uncle's orthopaedic clinic at Palghar, north of Mumbai.

Both the girls have been released on bail within hours, according to media reports.

The 21-year-old arrested for her Facebook post was among many who aired opinions on social networking sites.

"Her comment said people like Thackeray are born and die daily and one should not observe a 'bandh' (city shutdown) for that," Police Inspector Uttam Sonawane told the Mumbai Mirror.

Despite widespread concerns, there were no reports of unrest in Mumbai itself on the day of Bal Thackeray's crematon.

In recent months, the country has shown sensitivity to criticism of its politicians, sparking criticism in turn from freedom of speech campaigners.

In September, campaigners were outraged by the arrest in Mumbai on charges of sedition of a cartoonist for his anti-corruption drawings. The charges were later dropped.

Yes! you would be blaming her too but with the added touch of her being a Muslim. yet it would not make it any less of her right to do so. Just because you have lawlessness expected by thugs- rights don't get usurped . If you don't stand up with your voice , your vote, your activism in any small way you can show ( example: speak to 10 friends about this ridiculous arrest, mobilize a petition , anonymous if need be , something). Then they, the thugs and the over arching cops win! but if you think the cops were right as you indicated, then hopefully you are a minority group in India.

I would contact my national press and tell them that you will go stand in front of that very same cop station, that arrested these girls and say the very same words to them. Ask them if they come and report it. Let them arrest you too- watch what happens when it goes national. You will have thousands doing the same... that's how India's independent leaders shamed the British into leaving.
