Doc - Balasaheb is somebody to many and nobody to others. Does that matter if some post lacks a respect? When it comes to Nehru, I say things like idealistic idiot and fool. For many, Nehru is a respectful leader but for me, he is nobody. So can I be arrested just because he is somebody to many? Public figures are bound to be criticized and that is a democratic norm and the cops have arrested the girl illegally.

To repeat - freedom of speech may not be absolute, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist at all. If people don't have the freedom to say what she said, that would mean that freedom of speech doesn't exist at all.

All the courts agree that that freedom exists, which is why an investigation has been lauched by no less that an IGP.

The police can and did put her in jail.

Fined her.

And let her off.

She saw the error of her ways and apologized.

Hopefully she would have better sense moving forward.

Am sure a few well placed smacks from her parents in the privacy of their home would have contributed as well.

I'll give you guys an example.

I used to belong to a Bullet group on Yahoo Groups.

Owned by a hardcore Hindutvawadi Islamophobe and Gandhi hater.

In addition to taking regular digs at "mozzies", he would speak the vilest stuff about Gandhi as well.

This went on for a few years apparently.

Suddenly one day the group was suspended.

And a month or so later it re-emerged with a ton of posts deleted.

Freedom of Speech cannot be argued by international websites and portals if they are to continue in India.

International laws do not govern them. Indian laws do.

And they either comply. Or get blocked.

Not to mention the offending Indians face civil proceedings.

If you are posting from your company, it gets even messier.

The people who vandalized the clinic are behind bars right now. The policemen who arrested her are facing investigation, and will be punished. Eminent supreme court lawyers and high ranking police officers have all gone on record to say that this was a blatant misuse of power.

India does have a lot of freedoms, although many idiotic shiv sainiks and other fascists want to take those freedoms away.

They wont slap serious charges on a person they want to protect. There was no mob she was being protected from, it was a false arrest, as simple as that. That's the thing. People say far, far more incendiary things about politicians, but don't expect to get arrested for it. You have to ask yourself why it is that only speaking against certain persoanlities brings a fear of retaliation. You have to ask yourself why the shiv sena had to appeal for calm from its cadres when their leader died. What sort of maniancs are they if they have to be told at every stage "Don't get violent, don't get violent"?

We are all used to a lot more freeddoms than this. We can call the gandhis traitors, we can call the communists idiots, etc etc etc. THis girl hasn't done a fraction of a percent of what most people do here everyday. if she can be arrested for what she said, yes, it is a very scary thing. Some people are selective when it comes to picking when freedom of speech applies and when it doesn't.

If she deserves to be arrested, then every Indian on PDF can be given life imprisonment.

So why do you think she was arrested?

That's precisely what the investigation is for - to ask tough questions to the men who abused their power, who violated a citizen's rights instead of protecting it. They have promised to complete the investigation in 2-3 days time, and we will know. It is being conducted by a very high ranking officer, and I'm confident that the truth will be out.

Meanwhile, don't make up fiction that it was a noble act of protection - it wasnt. It was an act of criminal intimidation and wrongful confinement. Why they did it is for those people to answer - they will have to answer that before a court of law or an executive committee. Policemen are answerable to the people, and are expected to abide by the constitution in India.

Did you read the "stuff" she wrote? You yourself have written far, far worse stuff here on PDF. Were you expecting potential consequences when you wrote those? You wont realize the seriousness of this, unless you put yourself in her shoes.

She did far less than what we all do on PDF every day. It takes a twisted, blinkered mind to believe that that deserves arrest.
