NEW DELHI: Indians, it appears, are getting unhappier by the year, while their not-so-well-off neighbours in Pakistan are becoming more joyful, shows the latest United Nations ranking of the world's happiest countries.

India, which dropped four places in the 2017 World Happiness Report, fell a further 11 places in the 2018 report. It now ranks a low 133 on the list of 156 countries monitored by the United Nations' Sustainable Development Solutions Network for its annual 'joy' report.

By comparison, terror-ravaged Pakistan, which was already 'happier' than India in the 2017 rankings, is shown as being even happier in the 2018 rankings. It's on number 75, up five spots from last year.

Not just Pakistan, all of India's immediate neighbours are more joyful than Indians, despite many of them not being nearly as well-off economically or even socially. Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka are all ahead of India in the Happiness rankings. Even state-controled China is happier than India

The World Happiness Report published yesterday put Finland at the top among 156 countries ranked by happiness levels, based on factors such as life expectancy, social support and corruption.

What explains Finland being happiest despite it getting little sun and despite its frigid temperatures?

Well, our politics and our economics. I think the basics are quite good in Finland. So, yes, we have the perfect circumstances to have a happy life here in Finland '' said Sofia Holm, a 24-year-old resident of Helsinki, the Nordic country's capital, to the Associated Press.

Proof if it were needed......Indians are miserable bunch.

i guess there is co relation if Pakistanis are happy indians are not naturally cz their main aim of life since 1947 is to make Pakistanis cry in which they are failed miserably.

You are wrong on both counts. They are a reflection of how we treat each other other than your own. If we are unhappy then it is not the end of the world. We should explore what makes us happy.

Basically, the Ambanis, Adanis, Birlas and Tatas, of the world, essentially India’s rich, push up the average income of India i.e. the per capita income. As Wheelan writes: “The average income...could be heavily skewed by the megarich.”

In this scenario, the average income does not give us a correct picture. Further, it is safe to say, that the income of the average Indian is lower than the average income of India.

The median income of an Indian is still much lower than an average Pakistani. India ranks 2nd in the world with the most unequal distribution of wealth. More multi dimensional poverty in India than in Pakistan, yes the rich in India are richer but the vast millions below poverty level makes it irrelevant.

All the above indices are measured in the world happiness index, including the GDP per capita, and it is not some subjective, superficial thing like anyone can be happy it is just a perception and state of mind.

Hmmm.. Don’t get me wrong quite stoked that Pakistanis are happy with thier lives but the criteria given are contradictory to the measurement of happiness ie:

HDI - Sri Lanka is the only high HDI nation in the region

GDP per Capita - Sri Lanka has the highest GDP per Capita at $3900 that’s more than double the next highest India

Generosity and Social conscience - Sri Lanka has topped the generosity index successive years in the top ten as one of the most generous nations (Check google for reference)

And yet it remains below most countries in the region as regard to happiness as per this study.. Are we just miserable sooks or have they missed something when compiling this ??

Maryanmar is in a civil war and somehow ranked happier than India ?

Western deploped country's are less happy than Nepal

Pakistan ranked happier than Bhutan , a country thatb marks gdp by happiness

Iraq happier than Armenia ?

I read the entire thing , they have 0 justification for the ranks of respective countries. The only time they reference India is on the number of Indians migrating to the west & gulf states.

Only one man is responsible for a lot of unhappiness because he has made the life of middle class hell by his nonsense decisions like demonatisation, linking adhaar to everything, increasing taxes in the name of development etc. Today the common man is suffering from a lot of insecurity because the government is working for the rich only.

here people are abusing Pakistan and praising Europe and US. but they are blind to see our own nation that why India slips in happy index in MODI Raj bcoz a tea seller can not control the economy, he has no formal degree. only bhakts are happy here. we should improve our country condition and should not worry about our neighbors. that's the reason why India slips index bcoz we don't look weakness in ourself and started worrying about neighbors.
