Densely populated Muzaffarnagar, best known for being a major sugarcane and jaggery production centre, has virtually turned into a ghost city since the imposition of indefinite curfew on Saturday night in its Nai Mandi, Shahar Kotwali and Civil Lines police station areas.

All major markets — including Asia's biggest jaggery 'mandi' in the Nai Mandi area, Bhagat Singh Road, Ansari Road, Meenakshi Chowk, Jhansi ki Rani and SD Markets, Arya Sharma Road and Shiv Chowk — wore a deserted look on Sunday due to a complete shutdown.

Fear-stricken residents in the city and its nearby 15 villages and townships such as Kutba Kutbi, Shahpur, Soram and Tawli kept indoors through the day, fearing another eruption of violence.

"If the authorities concerned do not bring the situation under control in a day or two and the curfew continues to be in force for a couple of more days, we'll start facing an acute shortage of essential commodities such as milk, vegetables and other day-to-day items," said social activist Veena Sharma (54) in Nai Mandi locality.

Many residents of Civil Lines and Nai Mandi areas blamed ruling Samajwadi Party (SP) leaders and the authorities concerned for their failure to check the communal rioting. They accused the district authorities of acting at the behest of local SP leaders in failing to arrest the men who had hacked two youths — identified as Sachin and Gaurav — to death for allegedly harassing a girl from the minority community at Kawal village in the district on August 27.

Why do they always say "communal riot" but they never name the communities involved.

They just say "two communities".

Hahahahaha why ask questions who's answers are already known to you ???

Secular india !!!! Aperently some idiots believe details in news can create widespread reactions around the country and "one minority (?) " might have problems dealing with it.

These types of news are generally supressed down to maintain religious harmony but culprits took it as a weakness and keep doing the "good work". When the much needed thing is govt should go in details on National TV and show everybody who is culprit. That will help all communities. But apparently that only happens when Mr. Modi is involved.

Recently finished reading "Inferno" & "divine comedy" a very old quote by Dante fitts to most of my politicians
"The darkest places in hell are reserved for those who maintain their neutrality in times of moral crisis"

for peace

Condemning the violence in Muzaffarnagar, Muslim clerics today cautioned the people against "political conspiracies" aimed at dividing them on religious lines and appealed for peace and harmony in Uttar Pradesh.

"The Muzaffarnagar violence in condemnable.... For the past few days, there were attempts to create tension in western UP.... The violence there is the result of political game, which should be exposed," member, All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Maulana Khalid Rashid Farangi Mahli told PTI.

"Strict action should be ensured ... mere(ly) saying that some political parties are involved in it will not serve the purpose...,"

Mahali said, appealing to people to ensure that peace is restored. All India Shia Personal Board spokesman Mulana Yasoob Abbas alleged that some "forces" were trying to create a divide among religious groups for political gains.

"Some forces are trying to create a divide...they should be taken care of...," Abbas said, asking people to remain calm and alert against such propaganda and ensure peace.

The army today staged a flag march in riot-hit areas of Muzaffarnagar district where the toll in clashes between members of two communities rose to 12 even as 30 persons have been arrested for the violence.

Politicians in India are encouraging these types of attacks by staying silence. They put their own profit above the people who vote them.

Because one community is always a given in any riot it in India. People might be able to see a trend if they are listed.
