Amid Indias plans to supply 500 MW electricity to Pakistan, a delegation is on a visit to the neighbouring nation to discuss the modalities in this regard.
Sources said the delegation, that includes Rita Acharya, Joint Secretary in the Power Ministry, is on a three-day visit that began on June 10. The delegation would also have discussions with the Chief Minister of Punjab (Pakistan) Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, they added.
According to sources, the discussions would primarily be on ways to transmit electricity generated in India to Pakistan. Initially, the supply would be around 500 MW to the Punjab region in the neighbouring nation with broader plans to increase it to about 1,000 MW power, they added.
Once the modalities are worked out for having transmission links between the two nations, Pakistan could buy electricity from Indian power exchanges, sources said.
The visit comes against the backdrop of Pakistan reeling under severe power shortages. This had also become a major issue during the recent elections won by Nawaz Sharif-led PML-N.
The proposal for supplying electricity to Pakistan has been on the cards for sometime and earlier also there were discussions between the two sides on it.
A recent Pakistani media report had said the countrys new government would seriously consider importing 1,000 MW of electricity from India.
