Indian students rank 2nd last in global test

well, i hope you understand soft power, demographic influence in any country, etc mean something to add to a country's global standing.

Those are all nice to have (as bonuses).

The most important thing though, is strong fundamentals. The system itself (administrative/economic) must be strong and healthy.

The former USSR had massive military and diplomatic power. But they could not afford to sustain it, and today Russia's military budget is smaller than that of Britain.

What you mean by this sufficient level of education?

Also why Shanghai-China and not China.

Sufficient as in high literacy and good math/reading/science skills.

As for your second point, this OECD test was meant for the countries in the OECD, which are developed countries.

To assess developing countries like China and India, they took scores from places that were higher than average in terms of education, but not at the top. For China that was Shanghai and for India that was Tamil Nadu.

Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region of the PRC and so gets a separate ranking.

Shanghai is actually average or below. It's strength is in hardware, but its software (teacher quality and student drive) are lacking.

Bring them to Hunan. We will blow Shanghai out of the water. The competition here is insane.

hmm interesting. can u provide some statistical facts. wud love to go thru it.

That's right, and if you want the Municipality with the most high-ranked Universities, then it is Beijing.

It's all in the FISH -- brain food!

LOL, I read about that in the Economist actually.

Something to do with the Omega-3 fatty acids that are ingested. Fish consumption is especially high in East Asia.

Though that still didn't stop the Western nations from giving us a huge smack during the century of humilation. They just took our inventions (like gunpowder) and used it to shoot us in the face.

No english. Chinese though:

Shanghai scores required for Beijing U, with numbers: Year Lowest Highest Average NumberOfStudentsAccepted

2009 530.00 574.00 551.00 35

Hunan scores, 2009.

629.00 667.00 650.00 34

As you see, Hunan scores were almost 100 points higher than Shanghai scores on ALL counts. In fact, the LOWEST Hunan score was higher than the HIGHEST Shanghai score, yet EQUAL number of students from Hunan and Shanghai were accepted. Shanghai's population is 1/3 that of Hunan as well, so by all means, Shanghai should have had 3x less students get accepted to Beijing U.

Its simple to understand really. Each province has a quota of students it MUST accept from its own province, and the other provinces split the rest. If you're in a big province with few universities, you only get those few slots for Beijing U or Tsinghua.

So, the competition goes up, and you don't benefit from "educational protectionism" because your own province has so few schools.

One more thing... you could say well, there are more people from Hunan that are driven. That's hte POINT. That's why the education there is BETTER. Not because we have better classrooms but because we have better students. The best students in Hunan are so much better than the best in Shanghai, and the worst in both places are terrible - they juts don't go to school.

It's expected that rural tamilnadu and himachal would fare poor against students from shanghai, hongkong or Singapore. I'm sure have those students been middle class from Mumbai, Delhi or Kolkata, they would have compete with ease.

There are positives to be noted, though.

Atleast our reg flaggers here aren't screaming that Times of India is govt controlled tabloid bla bla. In fact, they quote "Times of India" for a change. Every other news from TOI is ridiculed. Atleast they are forced to retract here.

If something like this were in China ... the "China daily" will not post the news items facts (i.e. what the study reported), but instead the headline would be "Biased OECD tests again try to malign China".

It would follows the lines like this: The biased western media is again at it, putting their own benchmarks to China. It is obvious that China has vast cultural differences from the west. It's only that Chinese educational system has chinese characteristics. Was there any single representative from China in this study? No wonder, the irrelevant results are unsurprising, given the lack of understanding in the west about China. The spokesman of the Ministry of Education Industry just shrugged and said the study is totally confounded .... bla bla bla."

Thankfully, we don't have to put up with People's Daily And China daily.

if this list is entirely true then it does not add up with reality....cause in reality Indian students have not only proven themselves inside India but outside India too..

No offence..How many Science Nobels did you get?

For me education is not all about math & science. Its about getting the skills to succeed in the world. I consider Indian education a failure bcs it does not help our student to be innovators.

Is this a joke...No disrespect meant for TN or HP but the state with the highest literacy in India is Kerala..whose literacy program is considered as a model to be followed by other states. Even so you are comparing an Urban area Shanghai with an entire Indian state. Shanghai should have compared with Chennai or Shimla or better with Mumbai or Delhi.
