Such news should be taken with a pinch of salt. Most of these projects are final year engineering projects that get picked up by the press if they are invited to an event or if they are paid some money. Kudos to his passion but this kid will use this news piece in his job interview and thereafter forget about it. If he indeeds continue this, he needs to be supported but my experience tells me this is the last we will ever hear about the kid as far as this project is concerned. However, I wish I'm wrong...

With a range of 10km above a highly forested area with a dense canopy? How?

10 km range is enough to dodge the rebels and take their attention away from incoming assault. Over a dense forest they cannot see the aircraft due to its size , just hover it for 20 mins confuse them. And if it's shot down it will not be a big loss.
in open areas during night it can be used for attacks by fitting grenades with it and suicide dive.

UAV is relatively a new term coined for high tech military spy planes- it is just a RC plane- which generally comes under children toys now a days-

It is easy to make one with this specifications. There are RC 'spy' drone kits available, or you can make one yourself . Adding small arms is not a big deal. If the radius was larger, service ceiling and payload greater, that would be news.
