Huge jump in allowances for armed forces - Details here
Dec 20, 2017 | 14:20 IST | Srinjoy Chowdhury

The cutting edge of the armed forces are the commandos, the special forces. They are some of the best-trained soldiers and put their lives in danger more often than other armed forces personnel. They were, for instance, instrumental in ensuring the surgical strike inside Pakistan was a success. Now, all special forces officers will be paid Rs 25,000 a month and JCOs and others Rs 17,300. This is a big jump from the Rs 13500-21,000 for officers depending on rank, Rs 12,600 for JCOs and less than Rs 11,00 for the others.

The Siachen allowance is currently at Rs 21,000 per month for officers and Rs 14,000 for junior commissioned officers and men. This is going up to Rs 42,500 for officers and Rs 30,000 for JCOs and men.

The submarine allowance was a maximum of Rs 21,000 per month depending on the rank but it could also be Rs 13,500. Now, all submariner officers will be paid a flat Rs 25,000 per month. Sailors will also get a big rise: they will be paid a flat amount of Rs 17,500.

Postings in the Siachen glacier area are difficult enough, but other high positions aren't easy either. Now, officers will be paid Rs 25,000 per month, up from Rs 16,800 in the past. The equivalent figures for JCOs and men are Rs 17,300 and 11,200 respectively.

Similarly, counter-insurgency postings are difficult: the maximum casualties suffered by the army are in these areas. There too, there is a big jump, with officers to get Rs 16,900 per month, up from Rs 9450-Rs 11,700, depending on the rank the officer holds. For JCOs and men, it is now Rs 9,700 per month, up from Rs 4,500-Rs 8,100.

JCOs and jawans would get a maximum of Rs 240 for rum every month if they were high up in the mountains and Rs 45 if they were in a peace area. The rates have been upped to Rs 360 and Rs 68 respectively. Similarly, JCOs and jawans will receive Rs 45 per month for haircuts, up from Rs 30 and Rs 45 for soap, again, up from Rs 30.

Post-graduates will be paid better-- Rs 2,250 per month, up from Rs 1,500. Officers will also get a dress allowance, spit and polish being mandatory in the army: Rs 20,000 while other ranks will get Rs 10,000.

And finally, there's a funeral expense for all officers and men. It was Rs 6,000 for a death in the family. It is Rs 9000 now.
