Indian-Russian Brahmos venture to produce missile engines in India

It its so simple, why so uncommon? (Except for it starts at high speed that is)

Hiller Hornet (a ramjet powered helicopter)
Leduc experimental aircraft
Lockheed D-21
Lockheed X-7
Nord 1500 Griffon
Republic XF-103
SR-71 Blackbird (Turbojet engines that function as ramjets at mach 1+ speeds.)

Missiles using ramjets

Bomarc
BrahMos
MBDA Meteor
Bristol Bloodhound
Bendix RIM-8 Talos
North American SM-64 Navaho
P-270 Moskit
Akash missile
Sea Dart missile
2K11 Krug
MBDA ASMP

Uncommon, no I don't think so. There many more that wiki does not mention.

Uncommon, no I don't think so. There many more that wiki does not mention.

Uncommon in the sense that it is still used on very selected platforms. For supersonic speeds, ramjet is supposed to be much more effective than any turbojet, than why not installed on any fighter plane. Even the missiles it is used on are very limited.

..there are a multitude of challenges associated with sustained supersonic flight. These problems include and is not limited to aerodynamic heating due to sustained supersonic flight and restricted maneuverability.

Yep that's why the SR-72 is made of special materials and such a funny sexy shape.

Wrong on all counts there is nothing complex about a ramjet engine.

I don't want to comment whether you are rite or wrong on all accounts but in one account you surely lag behind the guy who asked the questions ie brain and understanding capabilities. The answer was too difficult for you to understand which had been easily got by other people.

It merely consists of a chamber to ignite a mixture of compressed air and fuel - it's that simple.

See many technologies including missile/launch vehicle technologies which follow Newton's third law of motion are so easy to understand but difficult to built.

I am giving you one such 'simple' technology to send a man to the space... and tomorrow I want to see you in the space... OK?

See its not difficult at all!!

If with your design one can understand the complexities of a ramjet engine required for a missile like Brahmos than you should be able to go to the space as soon as you get the drawings of my post.

Stop being condescending. Wold you be thus offended if it was said about a Chinese rocket? I doubt it.

Its not about Indian ramjet,Chinese Ramjets.

Its about Ramjet technology in general. The way DBC made it sound simple as if it was engine for a motorcycle..well Kinetic explained the same about manned space mission in the same way.

p.s.: @Kinetic's post - I am still rofl ing.

`Wow! Too much heat is being generated here, guys! Let us try and find some common ground here.

Facts--

1. Conceptually, Ramjet is a very simple technology, I think all of us can agree over that.

2. Realizaton of the concept--- Here the views bifurcate.

a) American view (espoused by dbc)--- "It's a very old technology which has been exploited by us for a long time in all permutations and combinations possible. You say that you have a functional Ramjet missile?...Big deal!"

Lets face it guys; from American pov this is factually correct. They have been working with this stuff since long time and so is the case with many advanced nations. There are tech challenges involved with Ramjet , but for these nations those challenges have been rendered obsolete a long time ago!

b) Indian view (by kinetic et al)--- "For India creating missiles with Ramjet (both solid and liquid ) propulsion and operationalising them has been a great achievement on technological front."

This observation is also spot on from indian pov. For a country to achieve such capabilties with limited resources and time constraints is remarkable. We started from scratch and now are advancing towards the frontiers of missile tech;that is awesome, irrespective of what americans or anyone else thinks! :mps:

3. Conclusion-- I'd say let us wait for hypersonic Brahmos 2, AVATAR, HSDTV with scramjet (possibly) and no nation on earth will be able to pooh pooh our abilites. Until then; carry on the good work! :smokin:

Spot on. Nationalism shouldn't stop anyone from evaluating progress realistically.

No it's not about Indian,Chinese or American knowhow.
Kinetic claimed the following:

Ramjet is very complex technology.
Disad:
1) Costly.
2) Heavy.
3) Technologically complex. Very few countries master this.

India has both solid (Akash) and liquid (Brahmos) ramjets.

See the below side by side comparison of a turbojet and ramjet engine. While the turbojet has several moving parts and complex components -the ramjet has none - making his assertion of 'Technologically complex' ridiculous.:agree:

turbo&

In any case, India has no input in the ramjet propulsion system that powers the Brahmos it is Russian. However, the guidance system is Indian; IMO a much more complex endeavor than ramjet propulsion.

That's not a ramjet, some guy stuck a coffee cup at the end of a leaf blower.

Of course it isn't but the principal is the same, the leaf blower provides pressurized air. The compression achieved is no where near the levels that are achieved in supersonic flight.

In nutshell; did you mean to say that compared to the turbojet; ramjet is neither costly nor heavy and certainly not more complex (techwise). If yes, then I agree with you completely. I based my reply on your earlier comment which was...

Just note the difference between what you "meant" and what you "said". That was the source of our confusion! :)

About the bolded part, I agree!
