60 Years of 25 kV AC Traction in India
Chakradharpur division of South Eastern Railways has got the distinction for first introduction of 25 KV electric traction in Indian Railways. It was decided to inaugurate 25 kV AC traction over Indian Railways on 15th December1959 on the occasion of the meeting in Delhi of international association of Railway congress permanent commission (AICCF). A transformer and a circuit breaker taken on loan from SNCF were commissioned within 10 days at the site near Kendposi ,OHE was energised on 25kV AC Kendposi to Rajkharswanand the pantograph of Loco no. 20250 was raised at Kendposi on 12th December 1959. (Fig.1). On 15th December 1959 the official inauguration ceremony took place in presence of AICCF officials when steam special train and electric loco ran parallel on the 3 km double track between the feeding post site to Kendposi station. The entire Rajkharsawan - Dangoaposi section was officially inaugrated for electric traction on 11th August 1960. The maintenance was started with one OHE maintenance depot at Chaibasa and the maintenance was carried out by motor trolley and with ladder with a limited OHE staff. Later TATA-Jharsuguda main line was electrified.

India had generous help from French National Railways company SNCF and first lines to be electrified with 25 kV traction had equipment borrowed from France.

The First loco 20250 was french mono-motor design BBM1 (BB: 2 bogies of 2 axles each, one bogie powered by 1 motor, M: Mixed traffic suitability), later classified as WAG 1.

With humble beginning of around 50 kms of AC traction, Indian Railways today has around 31,000 kms of electrified tracks on 25 kV traction and from measly 2800 HP engines, 12000 HP state of the art Alsthom and DLW make locos.

With Operating ratio of 95%, can we say yhat railways is in profit?
What operating ratio means is that for every 100 paisa earned, IR is spending 95% with remaining 5% as surplus. So essentially lower the operating ratio, better for railways. The surplus money is basically the reminder that IR can use for newer capital expenditure such as new lines, electrification, ageing management of assets etc. ideally an operating ratio of 87-90% is practically possible best case figure. But as we have seen with this government, they have been very aggressive in capacity addition and to me that is very heartening.

Diesel to Electric locomotive Conversion projects
IR is presently carrying out conversion of 3100 HP Diesel locomotives to 1000 HP Electric locomotives (by conversion and permanent coupling of 2 units). This arrangement is dubbed as WAGC 3 locomotive.

Similar conversion of WDG 4 (4000 HP) Diesel locomotives to 12000 HP electric locomotives is also being done. The new loco is christened WAG 11.

I have a mod helping me to curate it etc...to keep trolls away (and I hope people will just ignore trolls that pop up here, we will deal with them when we get round to it etc...so don't quote/reply them!).

Seven killed in train accident in India's Bihar state
Several others injured when the Delhi-bound train derailed in the early hours of Sunday.

At least seven passengers have been killed and several others injured when a New Delhi-bound train derailed in India's eastern state of Bihar.

Eleven coaches of the Seemanchal Express derailed near Sahadai Buzurg railway station, about 50km from the state capital Patna, early on Sunday morning.

Most of the travellers were asleep when the train, travelling at 55 kilometres per hour, derailed at around 4am local time (22:30GMT on Saturday).

"I was sleeping and suddenly there was a big bang and I found myself under a pile of bags," passenger Mahesh Kumar told AFP news agency.

According to a statement released by Indian Railways, a "rail fracture" caused the accident.

Local media reported that cash compensation of 500,000 rupees (almost $7,000) would be paid to the relatives of those killed, local media reported.

Minister of Railways of India Piyush Goyal recently claimed to have improved rail safety after a series of deadly accidents in the country.

"Over the last four and a half years, we have inculcated a new culture of implementing transformative reforms [...] As a result, the past year has emerged as a year of ‘many firsts' for Indian Railways," Goyal told local media last year.

India's state railways, largely built during colonial rule, is the main form of long-distance transportation for its 23 million passengers.

The government has pledged $137bn over five years to modernise the crumbling network.

But decades of underinvestment in rail safety infrastructure have led to numerous disasters.

A 2012 government report said 15,000 people are killed in rail-related accidents every year.

In November 2016, the Patna-Indore express derailed in Uttar Pradesh state, killing 139 people.

Last April, 13 children were killed when a train hit a school bus in the same state.

At least 59 people were killed in October 2018 when a commuter train travelling at a high speed travelled through a crowd of people on the rail tracks in northern India while they were attending a religious festival.

It was the deadliest accident of the year, bringing the number of victims of train accidents to 72 in 2018.

Why was this not done earlier bhai? It is very standard operating procedure here in North America.
