A 500Km/hr train system would kill domestic airlines. Given that domestic airlines have just made massive investments, doing so would not be intelligent thing to do.

Agree. Even for 500-600km/h, I opt for trains with Wheels! I want to see one day, a train can first operate at 600km/h from Shanghai to Beijing non stop, then operate at 350km/h to Zhangjiakou, at last at 250km/h to Chongli County, the winter sport resort!

Indian tracks are not of good enough quality that speed could be increased by a lot even after freeing of tracks. For HSR, a completely different system would be needed. Best probable is HSR connecting major Urban centers at long distance say 500Km, and them people taking normal passenger trains on older tracks to reach their destination.
