What's new

Indian Punjab is Self Destructing....Unlike Pakistan's Punjab

But India's growth has been led by the IT/Service sector, which would favour hyderabad etc. Indian punjab has remained mostly agriculture, with no prospects of driving growth.

As economies develop there is less focus on agriculture and more on service sectors.

East Punjab was divided into Hindi speaking Hindu majority Haryana and Punjabi speaking Sikh majority Punjab in 1966. Punjab and Haryana were similar economies, primarily agricultural, in terms of natural resources like water availability, land quality, other natural resource etc.

Punjab had a higher Per Capita Income than Haryana until early 2000's. Today, not only has Haryana an overall much better economy than Punjab, even agri growth in Haryana is 3 times that of Punjab.

It's basically the mistreatment of Sikh Punjab by the central Hindu government that has slowed down the economic growth in the state. It's 'centrally planned inequality' and the informed Sikhs are well aware of it

Pakistani and Indian Punjabs have nothing in common except the language.

Most Punjabis in Pakistan don't even know there's a Punjab in India too. The cultural and religious differences are way too opposite in both Punjabs to try and link them together.
they share two things

Haryana's growth cannot be analyzed without accommodating the fact that it surrounds Delhi on 3 sides. A lot of the wealth that has been generated is because of land holdings turning valuable as a result of the Delhi spill over effect. Delhi cannot keep growing, so the next generations of Delhiites have been moving out to Gurgaon, Faridabad (Haryana) and Noida (UP). Industries treat Haryana has an outpost of Delhi. This is the reason Maruti was set up in Haryana, as was Hero Motors. They grew into massive companies and created a strong industrial base.

To say that all this happened as part of a systematic effort to discriminate against Sikh dominant Punjab is very disingenuous. I don't know which kind of Sikhs you interact with, but the Sikhs in India that I know and meet harbour no such feelings. Yes, they are not Bhakts and never will be, but that is not the same as saying that they believe such conspiracy theories either. Indian Punjab is limited by its geographic location, which is why many Punjabis (Hindus and Sikhs) find employment in other states and countries and are quite happy with it.

Haryana surrounding Delhi on 3 sides and proximity of Gurgaon and Faridabad to Delhi maybe the reason behind them having highest Per capita income in Haryana but Nuh district bordering Gurgaon and Faridabad has the lowest per capita income in entire Haryana (Nuh has a 80% Muslim population, maybe that explains it?) whereas the Northernmost Ambala district is among the top 5 despite being hundreds of km away from Delhi. Also, southern districts of Punjab are no more far away from Delhi than say Kurukshitra (Haryana). Proximity to Delhi is clearly not the main factor here. Moreover, how does a strong industrial base in outposts of Delhi explain a 3 times greater agri growth in Haryana as compared to Punjab?

Sure there are various reasons and proximity to Delhi is one of them. Moreover, comparing two growth rates in terms of 'x times' can be misleading if the numbers are small. A 1.5% growth in one state vs 4.5% in another is not cause for alarm, at least not over a short period. However 5% vs 15% is.

If you believe this chart, the dip in Punjab's agri growth rate has been seen 2016 onwards (Haryana also dipped but arrested the decline). Till then both states were doing similar and their curves move together.

What does one attribute this departure to? Government interference? Punjab has been ruled mostly by Congress governments with Akalis playing second fiddle. Haryana too has been mostly Congress territory, with JD and INLD playing second fiddle. The current BJP government in Haryana is the first BJP government in Haryana in history. Now one could say that both Congress and BJP want Punjab to suffer, but it is hard to understand why Congress would keep coming back in Punjab if it was sabotaging itself systematically.

Lastly, agriculture growth rate cannot be the only basis for comparing two states. Even if Punjab is lagging wrt Haryana, it does not mean it is doing poorly overall. Its base was already large to begin with.

For example, Ludhiana and Jalandhar were hubs of SMEs in Punjab once. Central government gave neighbouring states tax exemptions resulting in moving out of industries to those states on a large scale. Punjab almost received no FDIs (say for example compared to Gujarat) from 2000-2010.. Even Haryana received much more. Many sikhs do believe that federal fiscal system and central government has been unjust to them (and state government corrupt and incompetent) and that's the main reason behind slower economic growth in Punjab. Analysing stats makes it hard to deny such claims

Haryana have huge inequality/poverty district wise. Thanks to region near Delhi getting huge investments while rest not so much. In fact now Haryana have quota system even for private companies to hire 75% locals, because no one hire them. So basically Haryana is getting help from Indian state machinery/Delhi while Indian punjab doesn't have that luxury.

East punjab have obvious disadvantages in India. For one they cannot compete with coastal states in industries. Unlike Pakistan where there arent many options if you want to setup industry. Indian punjab also didn't get any investment in IT etc While Lahore, RawalPindi, islamabad are hub of IT industry in Pakistan.

Basically if Pakistan prosper, punjab will get lion share of industrialisation, IT etc. Same is not the case with Indian punjab. The gap between Indian punjab and rest of Indian states will only increase in coming decades. Greater Delhi region, Mumbai, south India will get lion share of everything from IT to manufacturing.

Lol. Some posts here are laughable.

Firstly, I would like to inform the members here that not all analysis is based on religion. So if you are linking economics with religion, have some valid reason else its just communalism.

Anyway, Punjab growth stagnated since Punjab is essentially agriculture driven. During the green revolution, Punjab farmers went overboard with the reforms, which now has downsides. But its nothing like what is being portrayed here, Indian Punjab has still higher per capita GDP than Pakistani Punjab. And if you dont believe statistics for whatever reason, just open up google maps and check the sort of development on both sides of the border.

Tbf Pak Punjab is if Indian Punjab has to carry rajistan with it but with even more population (dry area in South which is backwaters so it's included in the PP as a whole)

So IP is representation of proper heartland of Punjab, while PP is not, it Carry underdeveloped areas that are not the easiest to devalop for magnitude of reasons
Like PP is all of Punjab good and bad but IP is just centeral Punjab
Which was historically devaloped and is conductive to devalopment compared to some arid or hard to devalop place

Sure, but then this post is wrong, no?

"Indian Punjab is Self Destructing....Unlike Pakistan's Punjab"

Correct version would be "Indian Punjab is going down..... Unlike certain parts of Pakistan's Punjab". I could agree with that.

Please don't speak up for us Punjabis.
That's correct, what's common is the bond that cannot be broken even by a genocide...

Pakistan/Muslim punjabis are a unique group in the history of the world, were massacred, ethnically cleansed and genocided by their ethnic punjabi sikh brethern merely 70 odd years ago, yet their affinity and admiration for their tormentors never dies, such is the durability of ethnic bonds.

During the Sikha shahi, if a Sikh saw a Muslim punjabi and stopped him and made him carry him on his back as a mule, the Sikh had the legal right to do so and yet the Punjabi Muslim endured and never lost the love of their Sikh masters.

No wonder this region never resisted any foreign invasion.

Indian Punjab will soon get textile parks which it have currently too , so these industrialization issue is going to be solved in future , rest assured our real IT boom is yet to come

Sikhs can thank Tara Singh and their marauding jhatas that massacred hundreds of thousands, raped and kidnapped thousands in '47 for their current predicament.

My family is originally from Hoshiarpur, E. Punjab, I have zero sympathy for and zero affinity with Sikhs.

You reap what you sow.
